Annual Treat

Mr and Mrs H.C. Marshall, of Longmead, kindly invited the children of Baldock Road to a New Year's Treat on Tuesday. The event was held at the Ex-Service Men's Club, and the room was beautifully decorated for the occasion.

A Christmas Tree stood at one end of the room, and the tree was heavily laden with every description of toys suitable for boys and girls. Over forty sat down to an excellent tea, which was supplied by Mrs H. Mead, of Buntingford.

Tea over, the room was speedily cleared for games, &c., which went on amid much noise and merriment. In the amusements and games assistance was kindly given by Mr E.J. Totman and Mr B.E. Thody, while the following ladies assisted Mrs Marshall with the tea and refreshments - Mrs H.H. Williams, Miss Ward, Mrs Totman, Miss Lewis, Mrs Rustead and Mrs B.E. Thody. Mr Marshall arrived during the evening, and was greeted with vociferous cheering.

The Christmas Tree was then lit up with coloured electric lamps and each child received a present. The grown-ups, too, all received a suitable gift from the tree.

At the close the children partook of sausages rolls, cake and lemonade. God Save the King was sung, and hearty resounding cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Marshall and all the helpers. The children dispersed highly delighted with the treat they had so much enjoyed.

Women's Institute

There was a good attendance at the October meeting which was held on Wednesday evening in last week. The President (Mrs H.C. Marshall) was in the chair.

A lantern lecture that was highly interesting was given by Mr W. Graveson, of Hertford, whose subject was "Folk law and legends of birds." A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer and also to Mr B.E. Thody, who operated the lantern.

All members joined heartily in the community singing which followed. The tea hostesses were Mrs Scarborough Taylor and Miss Ward. Notice was given of the concert to be held on the 24th inst. in aid of the hall fund.

The meeting concluded with the singing of the National Anthem.

12th Oct 1928 - Accidents

Accidents

Whilst driving a Trojan van from Cherry Green to Munden on a bread delivery round, Mr E. Ward, who is employed by Mr G. Pearce, collided with a 5-ton lorry. Fortunately nobody was injured, but the impact resulted in the Trojan being badly damaged. The damage to the lorry, of course, was of a minor character.

Another accident occurred at Chipping on Monday afternoon. From what our representative was told, it seems that a car travelling in the direction of London was overtaking a lorry, and in passing it is presumed that the lorry was struck by the mudguard of the car, so slightly that the driver proceeded on his journey being unaware of the accident, which resulted in the lorry being turned into the ditch.

The greasy state of the road resultant from the heavy rain of Thursday morning was responsible for an accident of an unusual character near Reed Hill. The car, which was a Morris Oxford saloon, skidded and struck the bank, turning completely round in the opposite direction, but the driver, the only occupant, systained no injury, although the car was badly damaged.

It is interesting to note that other accidents of this nature have occurred on the same spot during recent weeks.

Buntingford Petty Sessions

Friday Last, before Sir Charles Heaton-Ellis (in the chair), Captain H.H. Williams and Mr G.W. Pepper.

APPLICATION FOR POSSESSION

Mr Alfred J. Miller, of Braughing, made application for the possession of a cottage owned by him and in the occupation of Mr Robert Allen, of Braughing.

Mr Miller said he became the owner of the property in 1928. The tenant had been in occupation since 1926. The rent was 4/6, but when he (Mr Miller) became the owner he raised it to 5/6. The tenant had refused to pay the incrase, and the arrears now amounted to £13 11s 6d.

The applicant was anxious to get possession as he intended putting the cottage in a better condition.

Mr Allen said he had tried for three cottages, but had been unable to secure one. The cottage he lived in was in a deplorable condition, and he did not feel inclined to pay the increased rent until the owner repaired the place. He was quite willing to pay the back rent as he had the money with him, but he could not pay the extra 1/-.

The Bench discussed the matter, and the Chairman said the case would be adjourned for one month to enable the parties to come to terms.

AFFILIATION CASES

Leonard Ward, of Aspenden, and Sidney Oakley, of Buntingford, were summoned by Mr H.J. Andrews for non-payment of arrears in respect of affiliation orders made by the Buntingford Bench.

After hearing the evidence the Chairman said that unless the cases were settled within seven days both men would be committed to prison, Oakley for three months, and Ward for one month.

The last-named paid before the Court closed.
