Newsells v. Wyddiall

This match was decided at Newsells on Saturday last, resulting in a crushing defeat of the homesters by 123 runs.

Newsells went in first, and were quickly dismissed for the poor total of 19.

The majority of the Wyddiall batsmen batted very well indeed, S. Pledger being top scorer with 55. W. Hatchett (18), F. Hatchett (15), T. Pledger (11), and H. Hatchett (not out 10), helped splendidly to raise the fine total of 142.

For Wyddiall, H. Pledger took six wickets for 9 runs and S. Pledger two for 7.

Wyddiall v. Mr T. Pledger's XI

A match between these teams was played on Saturday last, Wyddiall winning by an innings and 50 runs.

Mr Pledger's XI batted first, and were quickly dismissed for 27 runs, Cooze being the only batsman to reach double figures. Cooze, however, was rather lucky - being bowled with a no-ball the first ball he received.

Wyddiall very promptly passed their opponents score, and after making 100 runs for 6 wickets declared their innings closed.

With 73 runs to get to avoid an inning's defeat, Mr Pledger's XI fared even worse than at their first attempt, scoring only 23.

Buntingford went another step in the Herts. Junior Cup competition when they defeated Hertford Athletic by 4 goals to 2.

The visitors opened the game very briskly and registered an early goal. Before half-time Martin scored for Buntingford.

The second-half was equally interesting, and after Pledger had scored for the home side the visitors registered another goal.

Play improved, and Thorogood and Leathers both scored for the home team. Hertford were game to the end, and although both sides made several energetic offensives there was no further score.

Bishops Stortford made their exit from the Herts Junior Cup Competition on Saturday, when they were defeated by Buntingford by three goals to nil.

Although Buntingford won quite comfortably, their display was not some of the best. Both sides were to some extent "free and easy" in their play, due perhap in no small way to the state of the ground in the vicinity of the goals.

Martin opened the scoring shortly after the start, and the score remained unchanged at half-time. The visitors were rarely dangerous during the second-half, and but for the excellent play of their goalkeeper, whose judgement and saves won applause from the spectators on several occasions, the score against the visitors would have been much higher.

Thorogood tried some of his noted pot shots, and one which struck the bar with terrific force deserved a point; he eventually found the net with a fine drive.

After Hatchett (the right back), Howlett (centre-half) and others in the defence line had all endeavoured to score, Leathers, another Wyddial hopeful, score the third and last goal.
