Buntingford Local Association of Boy Scouts

The Annual Rally in connection with the Buntingford and District Local Association of Boy Scouts was held on Wednesday in last week at Longmead (by king permission of H.C. Marshall, Esq., J.P.) There was keen competition and the rally was very successful.

The following three troops competed - Buntingford, Brent Pelham and Furneaux Pelham.

A 3 o'clock the scouts, who were in charge of District Commissioner Major M.E. Barclay, paraded on the Market Hill and then marched to "Longmead," where they competed for the Shield, which was previously held by the Brent Pelham Troop.

As will be seen by the following list, Buntingford and Brent Pelham each gained 75 out of a possible 90 marks, and therefore will hold the shield for six months each.

The judges were Dr Campbell, Mr E.E. Dennis and Mr G. Last, and Messrs. A. Lake, F.W. Butler, A. Freeman and E.J. Totman acted as stewards.

Mrs Marshall kindly presented the shield to the winning troops, and the scouts thoroughly enjoyed the other sports which took place.

Mr E.E. Dennis (Hon. Sec and Treasurer) thanked Mr and Mrs Marshall for their kindness in placing the meadow at the disposal of the Association, and also for the excellent tea which had been provided.

Major Barclay also spoke of the great interest Mr Marshall had always taken in the Scout Movement in the district.

Cheers were then given for Mr and Mrs Marshall, Major Barclay (Secretary) and helps.

We have been asked to mention that Scoutmasters are still wanted. More troops could be found if Scoutmasters can be obtained.

7th January 1927 - Westmill Christmas Party

Christmas Party

The Westmill Women's Institute had a very successful Christmas Party on Wednesday evening, 29th December.

The Village Hall was looking very festive, being decorated with holly and other evergreens.

In a corner on a table stood a little Christmas tree, round which bright coloured candles were burining.

A gay march was played as the guests entered at 7 o'clock, and then all joined in the Women's Institute song, "England."

During the evening there were musical solos, games and recitations, and carols sung by the members.

A sketch, called "The Allotment," was acted by Mrs Guinness and her sister, Mrs Barclay. It was most amusing, and peals of laughter from the audience showed how much it was enjoyed.

One quite forgot that Christmas was really over, for a true Christmas spirit seemed present, while crackers went off and mince pies were handed round.

There were about 90 people there, counting the children, whose unself-conscious charm helped to make the gathering cheerful and informal.

At the end of the party Mrs Deacon, who has been a most successful and untiring president, handed her badge to Mrs Guinness, the new president.

All felt very grateful to Mrs Deacon for what she had done, and welcome Mrs Guinness.

22nd April 1927 - Brent Pelham Fire

A serious fire broke out at Beeches, the resident of Major M.E. Barclay, joint master of the Puckeridge Hunt, on Thursday morning last.

The fire, which is stated to have been caused through a motor car back-firing, destroyed two valuable hunters.

Five other horses were rescued with difficulty, but the stables and newly-erected men's quarters were badly damaged.

The Bishops Stortford and Ware Fire Brigades were in attendance, and fortunately there was a good supply of water available.
