Balloon Race Results

The results of the balloon race in connection with the Congregational Church Garden Fete, which was held at Layston Cottage on the 18th ult., were made known on Tuesday in last week.

Seventy-three balloons were dispatched by Mr H. Cutts, all of which took a N.E. direction. Many doubtless dropped into the North Sea.

The prizes, consisting of pretty china dessert sets, which were kindly given, were won as follows:

1, Mrs Gulick, Red House, Buntingford, whose balloon ascended from the fete ground at 3.45p.m., and three hours afterwards came down at Great Yarmouth.

The finder with commendable promptness posted the card the same evening, and it reached Mr Cutts the next morning. It was a very speedy flight.

Mrs Mottram, High Street Buntingford, won second prize. Her balloon descended at Ipswich, and Mr Cutts received the attached card notifying the fact a week after the fete.

Funeral of Mrs Mottram

Amid signs of general regret, the funeral of Mrs W. Mottram took place at Layston on Wednesday, the 6th inst.

The remains, encassed in a plain oak coffin, were carried to the graveside by members of the Foresters' Friendly Society.

The service was conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. A. Howard, and the immediate mourners were Mr W. Mottram (husband), Mr S. Howlett (nephew), Mrs Howlett (sister), Mr W. Norris (brother), Mr Howlett (brother-in-law), Mrs Norris (sister-in-law), Mr Goodchild, Mrs Hants, Mrs Driver, and Miss C. Norris (nieces).

Amongst the townspeople present we observed - Mrs H. Coleman, Mrs C. Miles, Mrs A.G. Day, Miss Marsden, Mrs H. Clark, Mrs Aylott, Miss Aylott, Mrs E.G. Thody, Mrs C. Postle, Mrs Ambrose, Mrs A. Howard, Mrs E. Camp, Mrs A. Clark, Mrs H. Clark, Mr J. Smith, Mr A. Clark, and Mr J. Bishop (the last two representing the Buntingford Football Club) and others.

8th April 1927 - Death of Mrs W. Mottram

Death of Mrs W. Mottram

We regret to record the death of Mrs W. Mottram, wife of Mr W. Mottram, a well-known tradesman of the town.

Mrs Mottram, who led a life of uprightness and devotion to duty, was greatly respected by everyone, and her death came as a surprise to the town.

After a short illness she was removed to Royston Hospital, where, after every attention, she died on Friday last. Deep sympathy is felt for her husband and other members of the family in their great loss.

Mr Mottram and relatives wish to return sincere thanks for kind enquiries and sympathy during their recent bereavement.

25th June 1926 - Jumble Sale

Jumble Sale

The Jumble Sale advertised in these columns last week, in aid of the Buntingford Schools Improvement Fund, was held on Tuesday last in the George Assembly Room with satisfactory results.

The appeal for gifts was largely responded to, and Mrs Howard wishes to thank all who contributed, including one unknown donor of a parcel of books, and all who worked so willingly to make the sale a success.

Mrs Wyman, Mrs J. Smith, Mrs Butler and Mrs Coxall undertook the stall of women's and children's clothing; Mrs H. Feasey and Mrs Roberson the household goods; Mrs Mottram the books; Miss Hornby and Mrs Geaves the 3d. stall; and Mrs Howard and Mrs W. Jackson the men's and boys' clothing stall.

Over £10 10s. has been taken, clear of expenses.

Monthly Meeting

Parade of Shawls

The President, Mrs H.C. Marshall, presided at the monthly meeting of the Buntingford Women's Institute, held at the George Hotel on Wednesday in last week.

A demonstration on basket and cane work was given by Mr R.A. Bunn, of the H.C.C., and was watched very attentively by the members. Mr Bunn afterwards raffled the tray he made and gave the proceeds of the draw to the Teachers' Benevolent Society. The tray was won by Mrs T. Dellow.

On the proposition of the President, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Bunn for his very interesting demonstration.

There were 30 entrants for the parade of shawls, and some beautiful specimens were seen. Mrs T. Dellow was awarded first prize, Mrs Mottram second, and Mrs Scarborough Taylor third.

Votes of condolence were accorded Mrs H.J. Fordham, whose husband was killed at the Puckeridge Races, and Mrs Tapper, of Cottered.

The question of the summer outing was discussed, and it was suggested that an historical place such as Hampton Court be visited this year. The matter was left over for discussion.

Tea was served by Mrs H., Mrs W.J. and Mrs J May, of Wyddiall.
