Annual Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the members of the Buntingford Branch of the British Legion was held at the Ex-Service Men's Club Room on Wednesday evening.

The chair was occupied by the President, Captain H.H. Williams, and there was a good attendance of members, including a strong contingent from the Hormead Branch.

Balance Sheet

The Hon. Treasurer, Mr F.W. Butler, presented the balance sheet of 1923.

Receipts were: Subscriptions £5 18s. 4d., Donations 7s. 6d., Sale of Badges 15s., Poppy Day £64 14s. Total £71 14s. 10d.

Expenditure - Membership cards 10s. 6d., Club funds £1 5s., Badges £1 4s., Poppy Day fund £64 14s., Fees £1 16s. 9d. 

The balance in hand amounted to £2 8s. 7d. The balance sheet was adopted.

Secretary's Report

The Hon. Secretary, Mr G.H. Maughan, gave a satisfactory report of the working of the organisation.

Since February, 1923, 57 members had been enrolled, and 17 new applications for membership had been accepted for 1924.

The amount forwarded to the Headquarters in respect of Armistice Day was £66 1s. 4d., and after deducting the cost of the poppies, 85 per cent. of this was returnable to the branch for relief.

During the year several pension questions had been dealt with.

It was proposed to hold a public meeting next month, and Colonel Crossfield, D.S.O., had consented to address the meeting.

The report was passed as satisfactory.

Election of Officers

Capt. H.H. Williams was unanimously elected President and re-elected Chairman, Capt. G. Scarborough Taylor being elected Vice-Chairman.

The Chairman said that he would like to move that the Hon. Secretary, Mr G.H. Maughan, and the Hon. Treasurer, Mr F.W. Butler, be re-elected. They had both performed their duties in an excellent manner. The proposition was seconded by Capt. G. Scarborough Taylor and unanimously carried.

The election of the Committee was carried out by ballot, and resulted as follows: The Rev. H.L. Sheppard, Messrs. P. Woollard, H. Piper, A.E. Mayes, E. Totman, H. Cutts, G. Coleman, A. Dray and E. Crane.

Captain H.H. Williams and the Rev. H.L. Sheppard were elected as delegates on the area Council.

The formation of a sub-branch at Great Hormead was confirmed.

Thanks

The Secretary was instructed to write to the Secretary of the Buntingford Ex-Service Men's Club thanking the Committee for the use of the Club Room for the Legion meetings.

It was announced that subscriptions for 1924 were now due.

18th January 1924 - The Remembrance Day Fund

The Remembrance Day Fund

The President, Mr H.C. Marshall, presided at a meeting of the committee of this fund on Wednesday last. Others present were Captain H.H. Williams, Messrs. G.H. Maughan, F.W. Butler, E.J. Totman, J. Warner, A.E. Mayes and the Secretary, Mr E.J. Crane.

The Secretary reported that since Dec. 1st, 1923, 180 grants had been made to Ex-Service Men, widows and dependants.

The amount dispersed was £20 0s. 2d., which was made up as follows: Groceries £14 18s. 6d., milk and eggs 16s. 6d., meat £2 16s. 6d., bread 18s. 8d. and coal 10s.

Garden Fete at the Red House

By the kind permission of Mr and Mrs Claud Fraser, a Garden Fete was held at the Red House, Buntingford, on Bank Holiday, in aid of the Buntingford Bowls Club.

It was organised by the committee, the hon. sec. (Mr J. Lawrence) being ably assisted by Mr H. Clarke. Favoured with a brilliant summer's day, the 600 people who attended the Fete entered with zest into the pleasures, and spent indeed a very happy time.

At the opening ceremony of the Fete, Mr W.J. May, the Chairman of the Committee, said Mr Marshall, the President of the Club, who was to open the Fete, was so well known that he needed no introduction.

The Club especially wished to thank Mr and Mrs Fraser for the kindness in placing their beautiful gardens at the disposal of the committee. The Club had hitherto been somewhat handicapped by the use of a green that was slightly below the ordinary standard size, and this had affected their play. The opportunity had arisen of acquiring a suitable piece of land in Wyddiall Road, which was in course of construction as a bowling green.

Mr H.C. Marshall endorsed the remarks of Mr May, and in declaring the Fete open said the Bowls Club had every cause to be grateful to Mr and Mrs Fraser (Applause).

There was a very big choice of attractions, and all were fairly well patronised.

Messrs. Barratt's Jazz Band and Concert Party from Bedford besides playing selections and for dancing on the lawn up to 10 o'clock in th evening, gave two excellent concerts that were greatly appreciated. The humourous items on the programme deserve special mention.

Upwards of a hundred persons tried their skill at the treasure hunt, the treasure being won by Mr H.C. Marshall, whose success highly pleased the visitors. In guessing the weight of a lump of coal, actually weighing 89lbs. 6ozs., Mr E.J. Totman was the winner, his estimate being 90lbs.

Two, Miss Bartrop and Mr C. Fraser, guessed the weight of a cake (4lbs. 3 and three quarts ozs.), and the latter resigned his right, and the cake was handed to Miss Bartrop.

For the bowls competition, Mr F. Boniwell won premier honours with a score of 25, and in clock golf Mr C. Fraser with a score of 23. No less than six tied in hitting the target for a prime ham, which was eventually won by Mr Howard. This was superintended by Mr W.J. May.

The greatest novelty was the pig in a poke, the pig being presented by Mr Mannox, who managed this competition. There were numerous entries, and five tied, the winner being Mr Skipper.

For the stop-watch competition, Mr J.P. Hill, of the Bengeo Club, Hertford, was the winner with only a minute out. He gave the time 3.27, but it actually stopped a minute earlier, 3.26.

The flying arrow pastime in charge of Messrs. E.J. Totman and A. Mayes proved very popular, as also did Mr F.W. Butler's offer of 2s. for a penny, but the anticipations of those who participated in this feat were not altogether realised. A good prize was set apart for the lucky ticket. It turned out to be 126, and the possessor of this ticket has not yet claimed the prize.

It was just the evening for an open air whist drive, and the prizes were won as follows:

Ladies - 1 Miss Boniwell, 2 Mrs Stepley, lowest score Miss Wilds.

Gents - 1 Mr Walsingham, 2 Mr Watson, lowest score Mr Ward.

Teas and refreshments were in great request, and this part of the Fete arrangements was in the capable hands of a ladies' committee, which won high praise for the dainty way the teas were served on the lawn.

At the gate Mr J.L. Cornwell and Mr J. Boniwell, two of the oldest members of the Bowls Club, had charge.

For such a well-arranged Fete, to uphold a good old sport reaching back centuries, the promoters certainly deserved every success, and it is pleasing to record that the proceeds amounted to about £60.

6th August 1926 - Buntingford Local Association of Boy Scouts

Buntingford Local Association of Boy Scouts

The Annual Rally in connection with the Buntingford and District Local Association of Boy Scouts was held on Wednesday in last week at Longmead (by king permission of H.C. Marshall, Esq., J.P.) There was keen competition and the rally was very successful.

The following three troops competed - Buntingford, Brent Pelham and Furneaux Pelham.

A 3 o'clock the scouts, who were in charge of District Commissioner Major M.E. Barclay, paraded on the Market Hill and then marched to "Longmead," where they competed for the Shield, which was previously held by the Brent Pelham Troop.

As will be seen by the following list, Buntingford and Brent Pelham each gained 75 out of a possible 90 marks, and therefore will hold the shield for six months each.

The judges were Dr Campbell, Mr E.E. Dennis and Mr G. Last, and Messrs. A. Lake, F.W. Butler, A. Freeman and E.J. Totman acted as stewards.

Mrs Marshall kindly presented the shield to the winning troops, and the scouts thoroughly enjoyed the other sports which took place.

Mr E.E. Dennis (Hon. Sec and Treasurer) thanked Mr and Mrs Marshall for their kindness in placing the meadow at the disposal of the Association, and also for the excellent tea which had been provided.

Major Barclay also spoke of the great interest Mr Marshall had always taken in the Scout Movement in the district.

Cheers were then given for Mr and Mrs Marshall, Major Barclay (Secretary) and helps.

17th September 1926 - Bowls - Buntingford vs Rosedale

The Buntingford Bowls Club entertained Rosedale (Cheshunt) on Saturday last, defeating them by the big margin of 37 points: Buntingford 63, Rosedale 26.

The home club have now tied with Hadham at the top of the League (24 points each), which necessitates a match to decide the winners of the League on Hertford Castle Green on Saturday, September 25th, at 4 p.m.

At the last meeting of the Buntingford Bowls Club, it was proposed and seconded that the two skips should select their own teams, having 12 good players from which to make a selection. They have now decided to play the same team that have played in the last three matches - and consequently have a good chance of winning the cup and medals for this season, and we wish them the best of luck.

The following are the players and the same team that beat Hadham at Buntingford.

East Herts Bowls League

The Buntingford Bowls Club played a very interesting match on Saturday last again Much Hadham and after quite an excellent game were victorious by two points: 35-33.

Hadham are at present at the top of the League, and Buntingford have need to be pleased with the result.

Tomorrow (Saturday) Buntingford play Rosedale at Buntingford, and should the home team win they will be level with Hadham at the top of the League, and a match with Hadham on neutral ground will be played for premier honours in the League.

Buntingford have been second in the League on three previous occasions, viz.: to Havers Park, Hertford, and Hertingfordbury and have a good opportunity of gaining the coveted position this year.

18th March 1927 - Football - Standon Villa v. Aspenden

Standon Villa v. Aspenden

These two teams met in a friendly match at Standon on Saturday last, to play for a new football given by Mr Dixon, president of the Standon Club, and after a clean and sporting game, resulted in a win for visitors by two goals to nil.

The game opened rather fast, both goal-keepers saving in fine style, but the ground getting very slippery, made accurate shooting and skillful football impossible, and play was chiefly confined to midfield.

After having hard luck with a fine shot, H. Parker scored from close range to give Aspenden the lead at the interval.

Aspenden pressed on the resumption and missed narrowly on several occasions, one shot hitting the upright and returning into play, before K. Rayment increased the lead. The Standon forwards tried several breakaways, but were well held by the visitors' defence.

The referee was Mr J. Totman, of Buntingford.

After the match both teams were entertained by Mr Dixon to a meat supper, where he presented the football to the Aspenden Captain, and said that he hoped the Aspenden team would have the same success when playing with it as they had done that afternoon. (Cheers).

The Aspenden captain then thanked Mr Dixon for the good time he had given them, and called for three cheers which were heartily given, followed by "For he's a jolly good fellow."

Another Win

The Buntingford Bowls Club entertained Sawbridgeworth in a league fixture on Saturday.

The game was a very interesting one, and resulted in a win for Buntingford by 35 points to 33.

Buntingford team: Rink 1 - E. Brett, J. Pateman, H. Birkett and F.W. Butler. Rink 2 - H. Mannox, J. Lawrence, F.B. Sharp and J. Totman.

Singles Competition

Mr W.J. May, the captain of the Buntingford Club journeyed to Hartham on June 24th for a match in the E.H.B.L. Singles Competition.

Mr May won a good game by 21 points to 17.

Garden Meeting at Longmead

The monthly meeting of the Buntingford Women's Institute took the form of an "At Home" at Londmead on Wednesday afternoon.

Fortunately fine weather prevailed, and there was a large number present. Before tea, which was provided by the President (Mrs H.C. Marshall) and the Vice-Presidents (Mrs H.H. Williams and Mrs Fell), the members enjoyed a walk round the grounds.

There was a sale stall in charge of Mrs Coleman and Mrs May and a nail-driving competition. The flower competition was won by Mrs C. Bolton, of Wyddiall, who brought a beautiful bouquet. The caning competition was won by Mrs J. Aylott, the same member winning the tray competition.

The President read the financial statement in connection with the Whit-Monday Fete, the particulars of which are given in another column. The statement was considered most satisfactory, and the President said that thanks were due to all those who had helped to make the event such a complete success.

The dramatic section of the Institute presented a scene from Shakespeare's "As you like it." This was performed at the W.I. dramatic competitions at Hertford on Saturday last, when the Buntingford Institute gained fifth place.

The Buntingford Bowls Club journeyed to Sawbridgeworth on Thursday, May 13th, for the first match of the season, when a good game resulted in a victory for the home team.

The game was stopped twice owing to hailstorms.

Annual General Meeting

The Annual General Meeting of the Buntingford Bowls Club was held at the Headquarters of the Club on Wednesday evening last, Mr H.C. Marshall, the President of the Club presided, being supported by Mr W.J. May (Captain) and Mr J. Lawrence (Hon. Sec.)

The Hon. Secretary presented his annual report. During the season the Club played 20 league matches, of which 14 were won and six lost. In addition to again winning the Aston Challenge Cup the Club created a record  in defeating the Rest of the League for the first time in the history of the League.

In presenting the balance sheet Mr Lawrence said a large amount of money had been expended on the new green, and further expense was necessary. He wished to make it known that in the event of the Club being wound up the new Green would become the property of the Buntingford Nursing Association.

He hoped, therefore, that the inhabitants of Buntingford and district would support the Bowls club as they had done in the past. The Club would then go on to further successes, and would possess one of the best Greens in the County.

In moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet Mr W.J. May said he did so with much pleasure. He was sure they could not find a more energetic secretary than Mr Lawrence, who gave a great deal of his time to the Club, and the members appreciated his services.

Mr F.W. Butler seconded, and the accounts and reports were unanimously adopted.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Captain H.H. Williams moved the re-election of Mr H.C. Marshall as president. They all knew what Mr Marshall had done for the Club, and the manner in which he entertained them on winning the Challenge Cup. (Applause).

Mr A.C. Bartlett seconded, and the vote was carried with acclamation.

Mr H.A. Mannox moved the re-election of the Vice-Presidents, with the addition of Sir Charles Heaton-Ellis. 

This was seconded by Mr J. Lawrence, and carried unanimously.

Mr Lawrence was re-elected Hon. Sec. and Treas., with Mr Mannox as Assistant Secretary.

Mr W.J. May said he would be leaving the district this spring, but hoped he would not sever his connection with the Club for some time. His years of office with the Club had been most pleasant. (Applause). He had much pleasure in proposing that Mr Butler be elected Captain.

Captain Williams, in seconding Mr May's proposition, said how much the members would regret Mr May's departure. Mr May had brought to the Club a measure of success which was at one time never to be expected. (Applause).

The meeting unanimously agreed to make Mr May a Honorary Life Member of the Club.

Mr E.G. Thody proposed, and Mr C.H. Poulton seconded, that the following be elected to serve on the General Committee: Messrs E.J. Totman, J. Boniwell, F.B. Sharp, J.L. Cornwell, H.E. Birkett, F. Crouch, E.R. Brett, H.A. Mannox, J. Bishop, J. Cutts, E.P. Borsberry, and L. Hagger.

OTHER BUSINESS

Business in connection with the new Green, and a suggested match with Luton Town on the date of the opening of the new Green, was discussed, after which a vote of thanks to the Chairman for presiding, concluded the meeting.

Annual Treat

Mr and Mrs H.C. Marshall, of Longmead, kindly invited the children of Baldock Road to a New Year's Treat on Tuesday. The event was held at the Ex-Service Men's Club, and the room was beautifully decorated for the occasion.

A Christmas Tree stood at one end of the room, and the tree was heavily laden with every description of toys suitable for boys and girls. Over forty sat down to an excellent tea, which was supplied by Mrs H. Mead, of Buntingford.

Tea over, the room was speedily cleared for games, &c., which went on amid much noise and merriment. In the amusements and games assistance was kindly given by Mr E.J. Totman and Mr B.E. Thody, while the following ladies assisted Mrs Marshall with the tea and refreshments - Mrs H.H. Williams, Miss Ward, Mrs Totman, Miss Lewis, Mrs Rustead and Mrs B.E. Thody. Mr Marshall arrived during the evening, and was greeted with vociferous cheering.

The Christmas Tree was then lit up with coloured electric lamps and each child received a present. The grown-ups, too, all received a suitable gift from the tree.

At the close the children partook of sausages rolls, cake and lemonade. God Save the King was sung, and hearty resounding cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Marshall and all the helpers. The children dispersed highly delighted with the treat they had so much enjoyed.

Annual General Meeting

PROPOSED NEW GREEN

The annual general meeting of the members of the Buntingford Bowls Club was held at the George Hotel on Thursday evening in last week. Mr G. Scarborough Taylor presided, and was supported by the Captain (Mr W.J. May) and the Hon. Sec. and Treas. (Mr J.L. Cornwell).

After the minutes of the last general meeting had been read and confirmed, the Chairman read a letter from Mr H.C. Marshall (the President of the Club), who said he regretted being unable to be present that evening.

REPORTS

Mr J.L. Cornwell read his annual report. During the past season the club had played 34 matches, and had entered for the various competitions in the East Herts. Bowls League. In this League they had scored 767 points against their opponents 606.

Mr W.J. May and Mr J. Lawrence had kindly presented gold and silver medals for a club competition, which was most successful. The Captain's Cup had not been won outright, as owing to bad weather the competition was not finished.

The finances of the club were satisfactory; on last year's workings there was a small adverse balance of 1/5, which had been defrayed that evening. (Applause).

The Chairman said he considered the report and accounts very satisfactory. In passing, he would like to add that the annual dinner, at which he had the pleasure of being present, was a most successful affair; he was sure everyone present spent a very happy evening.

The accounts and report were then passed, on the proposition of the Chairman, seconded by Mr F.B. Sharp.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS

Mr W.J. May moved the re-election of the President (Mr H.C. Marshall). Mr Marshall was a true sport and was always willing to do his utmost for the club. He (Mr May) hoped that their president would find pleasure in supporting the ancient game of Bowls (applause)

This was seconded by Mr F.W. Butler and carried.

Mr J. Lawrence moved the re-election of the Vice-Presidents en bloc with the addition of Mr George Aston and Mr Chapman-Wood. The club was very grateful to the Vice-Presidents for their support and interest.

Mr E.J. Totman seconded.

Mr C.H. Poulton replied on behalf of the Vice-Presidents, and said he was pleased the club was going successfully.

Mr W.J. May, who has been Captain for three seasons, proposed that Mr F.W. Butler be asked to be Captain for 1926.

Mr Butler moved an amendment that Mr May be re-appointed, and this being seconded by Mr J. Lawrence was carried unanimously. The Chairman said he was pleased Mr May had reconsidered the matter. He was a man of keenness and enthusiasm, coupled with tact.

Mr F.W. Butler was unanimously appointed Vice-Captain on the proposition of Mr E.J. Totman, seconded by Mr Cornwell.

Mr Cornwell then intimated that he was no longer able to carry out the duties of Hon. Sec. and Treasurer. Mr Butler then proposed that Mr J. Lawrence be appointed. In moving this, he (Mr Butler) would like to say that the members were very grateful to Mr Cornwell for the way he had carried out the combined duties (Applause).

Mr Lawrence agreed to take over the post, and said he would do his best.

The general committee elected were as follows: Messrs W.J. May, F.W. Butler, J. Lawrence, E.J. Totman, J. Pateman, J. Boniwell, E. Birkett, F. Crouch, J.L. Cornwell, and H. Clarke.

The green committee elected were - Messrs F.W. Butler, E. Brett, J.L. Cornwell, W.J. May, E.J. Totman, and J. Lawrence.

Selection committee - The Capt. and Vice-Captain, and Messrs E.J. Totman, J. Lawrence, J. Boniwell, and F.B. Sharp.

OTHER BUSINESS

It was decided to enter the East Herts. Bowls League and the Rinks and Pairs Competitions.

The Captain said the question of a new green was on the agenda. As a matter of fact the new green did not exist, but the [sic] hoped something could be done to get a longer green than the one they had at present. When the club visited other clubs in the League, they had to play on full dized greens, and it was some time before the Buntingford players could get accustomed to the length. Mrs Ashford had kindly offered the club another site, and if the members agree a small committee might be formed to go in to the question of cost, &c. 

Various suggestions were put forward, and it was eventually decided to appoint a small sub-committee to discuss the matter and report later. The committee appointed were Messrs. G. Scarborough Taylor, W.J. May, F.W. Butler, C.H. Poulton, E.J. Totman and J. Lawrence.

At the whist drive held at the British Legion club on Tuesday evening last, there were 10 tables in use, and the prize-winners were:

Ladies - 1 Miss O. Flynn, 2 Mrs Lawrence. Lowest score - Mr Starr (playing as lady).

Gents - 1 Mr Totman, 2 Mr Watson. Lowest score - Mr Young.
