On Saturday in last week a peal of Stedman Triples 5040 changes was rung on the bells of the Parish Church in three hours and seven minutes.

According to records, only one peal has ever been rung on these bells, and this was scored over 180 years ago by a local band of ringers. The band on this 18th ult. were all visitors to the parish, and the conductor is a well-known London ringer of St Paul's Cathedtal.

The band was composed as follows:

C.F. Winney (London), conductor, treble; F.W. Richardson (Brockley), 2; B. Patmore (Great Munden), 3; G.Gray (Hertford), 4; S. Carter (Lt. Munden), 5; G. Dawson (Leytonstone), 6; W.H. Lawrence (Lt. Munden), 7; G.H. Carter (Lt. Munden), tenor.

The Parish Magazine

The Rector is responsible for yet another parish innovation in Aspenden which no parish can afford to do without, and that is the Parish Magazine.

Everything he promises the Rector determines shall be put into practise, and the Magazine - we believe the first to be printed for Aspenden parish - has been engaging his attention for some time past.

The first edition, price twopence, will be issued on January 1st, and subsequent issues will be published on the first day of each consecutive month.

A feature of the Magazine is a handsome photograph on the front page of the Parish Church, and in addition to the Rector's letter, the monthly issue of the Diocesan Magazine and the quarterly C.M.S. Leaflet is contained in the publication; from May next the Magazine of the Church Assembly will be added, thus bringing the parishioners into touch with the affairs of the Church in the Parish, Diocese, Empire and the world.

Advertisements can be entertained for publication in the Magazine, terms for which will be submitted by the Rector.

There was a record number of communicants on Christmas Day, and the service on Christmas morn was a bright and happy one.

The bells ushered in the festival by a joyous peal, which proclaimed the dawning of Christmas Day.

The Rector, Rev. L.A. Ewart, preached an appropriate sermon at the morning service, dealing with the episodes of the First Christmas Night, showing that the scene at Bethlehem during the birth of the Holy Infant proved that God honoured animal creation, childhood and motherhood.

The hymns were rendered with style, and the interior of the Church was tastefully decorated. The collection, which was devoted to the coal club, came to the record sum of £3 19s.

On the previous Sunday, there was a large congregation at a carol service in the evening, when the children of the Senior School sang carols under the direction of Mr E.E. Dennis. The Rector preached on the subject of the Christmas Child.

Aspenden v. Braughing

The above teams met at Aspenden on Saturday last - and a poorer exhibition of batting would hardly be possible.

Not one player in each innings scored double figures, Parker (for Braughing) being simply unplayable, taking eight wickets at a very small cost.

Manning an Rayment were both quite as unplayable as Parker - dismissing Braughing for the meagre total of 15.

Rye Park v. Aspenden

Aspenden visited Rye Park on Saturday last with a weakened team, and were defeated by four goals to two in a fast game.

Having most of the play in the first-half, Aspenden missed many chances of scoring, and were only leading at half-time by two goals.

The Park got away quickly in the second-half, and soon reduced the lead, and then drew level.

Aspenden tried hard after this, but the home-side, encouraged by their success, scored two more goals, giving the visiting goalie no chance.

With a little more luck, Aspenden might hve found the net again before the end.

Aspenden v. Hertford Juniors

Aspenden opened the season on Saturday last, with a fine win at home against the Juniors in the Hertford and District League by five goals to two.

The home team, winning the toss, started with the wind behind them and were soon pressing.

Some fine play on the left wing led to the first goal. Aspenden were easily having the best of the game, and scored three more goals before half-time.

Their defence was playing a sound game, but directly after the change over the Juniors scored. This was followed by a goal to the home reds.

Towards the end the visitors made a fine break-away and scored a good goal.

Aspenden v. Buntingford Town

Aspenden entertained Buntingford in a friendly on Saturday last, and were defeated by 4 goals to 1.

The score was rather flattering to the winners, and a draw would have been a fairer result.

Aspenden attacked strongly in the first-half, but it was the Town that scored first, following a melee in front of the home goal with the goalkeeper out, R. Pledger put through.

This was followed by some fine play on the home left wing and after some missed chances, E. Newman scored the best goal of the match, making the interval score 1-1.

Buntingford started to press in the second-half and an error by the home defence led to S. Thorogood scoring.

Aspenden attacked after this, and only some fine goalkeeping stopped them from scoring. A centre by the visitors left wing, which R. Parker had the misfortune to put through his own goal, and a poor clearance by the home-defence gave H. Clark and easy chance which he accepted.

Mr E.E. Dennis was the referee.

The second-half was very evenly contested, with Aspenden doing most of the pressing, but unable to score.

Just before the end the 'Bury added one more to their lead by a fine long shot.

Aspenden v. Allenburys

Played at Aspenden on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for the home side after a good game.

For about half-an-hour the play was very even, then Aspenden, who were always more dangerous, obtained three quick goals, H. Parker scoring the first two, and from a well-placed corner the visitor's centre-half put through his own goal.

Just before the interval the 'Bury scored. At half-time Aspenden were leading 3-1.

Immediately on resumption Aspenden attacked, and K. Smith increased the lead.

The 'Bury then scored direct from a corner, but after a melee in their goal-mouth H. Parker again scored.

Result- Aspenden 5, Allenburys 2.

Aspenden v. Hertford Athletic

Aspenden were at home to the Athletic on Saturday last, this was the return game of a fortnight before which Aspenden won, so they Athletic brought a strong team, and fully deserved the point they gained.

In the first-half the visitors did the majority of the attacking, and only the excellent play of the home defence kept them from scoring more than once, this was from a penaty for hands, which gave them the lead at the interval.

The second-half was more evenly contested, and after a quarter of an hour's play, Aspenden equalized from a well-placed corner that S. Dowler headed through.

The visitors were then awarded another penalty, but the home goalie saved well from the spot kick. Shortly afterwards Aspenden took the lead, when a shot fell in the goalmouth which enabled H. Parker to score at close range.

The Athletic then played with renewed energy, and from a fine movement easily scored.

This was followed by midfield play, and no further scoring.

Result - Aspenden 2 - Hertford Athletic 2.

Hertford Town Juniors v. Aspenden

Aspenden visited Hertford on Saturday last, and although they lost by the only goal scored, they did most of the attacking, and were very unfortunate in not scoring on several occasions, but the muddy condition of the ground made foothold very difficult.

Aspenden opened strongly, and quickly forced two corners, from which they were unlucky in not scoring. They still continued their aggression which caused the home defence to be extended, but half-time arrived with no score.

Aspenden continued to press in the second-half, but could not penetrate the home defence. Just before time the home inside-right broke clean through the visitors defence well up the field, and scored with a fine shot.

Result:

Hertford Town Juniors

Aspenden - 0

Referee - Mr A.C. Walls, of Hertford.
