Annual Tea

A happy time at the Hall

The annual tea in connection with the Buntingford branch of the Salvation Army Home League was held in the Salvation Army Hall on Wednesday of last week.

The whole of the arrangements were in the hands of Mrs M. Parker (the Hon. Secretary) and Mrs E. Miles (the Hon. Treasurer), who were complimented by all present on the success of the event.

The tea tables were tastefully decorated, and the members sat down to a sumptuous tea, after which the tables were cleared and games and competitions carried on throughout the evening. Mrs Miles also kept the company amused with some excellent gramophone selections.

Among those present were Captain H. Ridgewick and Lieut. H. Shepherd, of the Buntingford Corps.

Membership of the Salvation Army Home League is 1d. per week, and intending members should give their names to Mrs Parker.

We regret to record the death of Mrs Lucy Parker, of London Road, which occurred on Friday last after a somewhat lengthy illness.

The funeral took place at Aspenden Church on Wednesday last. Much sympathy is felt for the relatives and friends in their loss.

Aspenden v. Braughing

The above teams met at Aspenden on Saturday last - and a poorer exhibition of batting would hardly be possible.

Not one player in each innings scored double figures, Parker (for Braughing) being simply unplayable, taking eight wickets at a very small cost.

Manning an Rayment were both quite as unplayable as Parker - dismissing Braughing for the meagre total of 15.

Aspenden v. Buntingford Town

Aspenden entertained Buntingford in a friendly on Saturday last, and were defeated by 4 goals to 1.

The score was rather flattering to the winners, and a draw would have been a fairer result.

Aspenden attacked strongly in the first-half, but it was the Town that scored first, following a melee in front of the home goal with the goalkeeper out, R. Pledger put through.

This was followed by some fine play on the home left wing and after some missed chances, E. Newman scored the best goal of the match, making the interval score 1-1.

Buntingford started to press in the second-half and an error by the home defence led to S. Thorogood scoring.

Aspenden attacked after this, and only some fine goalkeeping stopped them from scoring. A centre by the visitors left wing, which R. Parker had the misfortune to put through his own goal, and a poor clearance by the home-defence gave H. Clark and easy chance which he accepted.

Mr E.E. Dennis was the referee.

14th January 1927 - Football - Aspenden v. Allenburys

Aspenden v. Allenburys

Played at Aspenden on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for the home side after a good game.

For about half-an-hour the play was very even, then Aspenden, who were always more dangerous, obtained three quick goals, H. Parker scoring the first two, and from a well-placed corner the visitor's centre-half put through his own goal.

Just before the interval the 'Bury scored. At half-time Aspenden were leading 3-1.

Immediately on resumption Aspenden attacked, and K. Smith increased the lead.

The 'Bury then scored direct from a corner, but after a melee in their goal-mouth H. Parker again scored.

Result- Aspenden 5, Allenburys 2. 

25th February 1927 - Football - Aspenden v. Hertford Athletic

Aspenden v. Hertford Athletic

Aspenden were at home to the Athletic on Saturday last, this was the return game of a fortnight before which Aspenden won, so they Athletic brought a strong team, and fully deserved the point they gained.

In the first-half the visitors did the majority of the attacking, and only the excellent play of the home defence kept them from scoring more than once, this was from a penaty for hands, which gave them the lead at the interval.

The second-half was more evenly contested, and after a quarter of an hour's play, Aspenden equalized from a well-placed corner that S. Dowler headed through.

The visitors were then awarded another penalty, but the home goalie saved well from the spot kick. Shortly afterwards Aspenden took the lead, when a shot fell in the goalmouth which enabled H. Parker to score at close range.

The Athletic then played with renewed energy, and from a fine movement easily scored.

This was followed by midfield play, and no further scoring.

Result - Aspenden 2 - Hertford Athletic 2.

18th February 1927 - Home League

Home League

At the last meeting of the Home League, held at the Salvation Army Hall, the following members were given suitable presents in recognition of their services for the League: Mrs Parker, Mrs Miles, Mrs Hills, and Miss L. Plumb.

The presentations were made by Capt. Green who, in the course of a few well-chosen words, expressed thanks on behalf of the donors for the work carried out.

The recipients of the gifts suitably replied.

25th March 1927 - Football - Aspenden v Old Hertfordians

Aspenden v Old Hertfordians

Aspenden were at home to the Old Boys on Saturday last, and the game was played under ideal conditions, the ground being hard and dry for once after many weeks of mud.

Play was keen and sporting, and resulted in an easy win for the homesters.

The Old Boys started at a great pace and were two goals up after half-an-hour's play, but the Aspenden forward line, which had been rather raged [sic], settled down, and scored two goals through Hornet, making the scores level at the interval.

In the second-half the Old Boys completely fell away, and the home side monopolised the play, H. Parker performed the hatrick. S. Dowler scored once, and W. Sturch, the home team's left-back, came well up the field to score twice.

Result - Aspenden 8, Old Hertfordians 2.

18th March 1927 - Football - Standon Villa v. Aspenden

Standon Villa v. Aspenden

These two teams met in a friendly match at Standon on Saturday last, to play for a new football given by Mr Dixon, president of the Standon Club, and after a clean and sporting game, resulted in a win for visitors by two goals to nil.

The game opened rather fast, both goal-keepers saving in fine style, but the ground getting very slippery, made accurate shooting and skillful football impossible, and play was chiefly confined to midfield.

After having hard luck with a fine shot, H. Parker scored from close range to give Aspenden the lead at the interval.

Aspenden pressed on the resumption and missed narrowly on several occasions, one shot hitting the upright and returning into play, before K. Rayment increased the lead. The Standon forwards tried several breakaways, but were well held by the visitors' defence.

The referee was Mr J. Totman, of Buntingford.

After the match both teams were entertained by Mr Dixon to a meat supper, where he presented the football to the Aspenden Captain, and said that he hoped the Aspenden team would have the same success when playing with it as they had done that afternoon. (Cheers).

The Aspenden captain then thanked Mr Dixon for the good time he had given them, and called for three cheers which were heartily given, followed by "For he's a jolly good fellow."

A larger number than ever participated at the whist drive and dance, organised by the Town Band, on Saturday evening.

Mr T. Wornham again officiated as M.C., and the successful whist players were:

Ladies - 1 Mrs Case, 2 Mrs Capps.

Gents - 1 Mr H. Parker, 2 Mr W. Watson.

4th March 1927 - Football - Braughing Rovers v. Aspenden

Braughing Rovers v. Aspenden

Played at Braughing on Saturday last, this Hertford and District Junior League match resulted in a win for the visitors by six goals to two. The official referee not appearing, Mr Arnold refereed in a very able manner.

Braughing, winning the toss, took advantage of a strong wind and were soon attacking. After about ten minutes play they were awarded a penalty, and scored from the spot kick.

Shortly afterwards, J. Holmes equalized with a fine shot from a free kick. The Rovers then forced a corner which was headed through, and a half-time held the lead by two goals to one.

In the second-half, Aspenden held the upper hand completely, and scored five goals without reply, although Braughing made occasional break-aways, but nothing tangible resulted.

G. Holmes equalized for Aspenden, and S. Dowler gave them the lead. J. Holmes then scored twice, and H. Parker, who had returned to form, scored the last.

15th April 1927 - Football - Roydon v. Aspenden

Roydon v. Aspenden

Visiting Roydon on Saturday last, Aspenden were successful by six goals to two. Aspenden adapted themselves to the flooded condition of the ground, and were much surer and swifter in their movements.

Both backs played a sound game throughout. Roydon, with close passing, attacked for the first ten minutes, but Aspenden were the first to score through G. Holmes.

Shortly afterwards the home right right wing got through to score with a cross shot. Aspenden took the lead again before the interval, S. Dowler scoring.

In the second half, Aspenden maintained their superiority, and J. Holmes quickly scored, and H. Parker added another.

Roydon then scored from a long shot, the greasy ball slipping by the goalkeeper's fingers. Towards the end T. Moule dashed in from the right wing and scored, and J. Holmes dribbled through and scored from close range.

The above teams met at Aspenden on Whit-Monday, and a very pleasant and close game resulted.

Aspenden batted first, and made 57. Jackson (22) and Stoten (14) were the principal scorers.

Clapton made 6 more than their opponents, thus winning the match. Gardener and Prince were the only batsmen to reach double figures.

Wyddiall v. Mr T. Pledger's XI

A match between these teams was played on Saturday last, Wyddiall winning by an innings and 50 runs.

Mr Pledger's XI batted first, and were quickly dismissed for 27 runs, Cooze being the only batsman to reach double figures. Cooze, however, was rather lucky - being bowled with a no-ball the first ball he received.

Wyddiall very promptly passed their opponents score, and after making 100 runs for 6 wickets declared their innings closed.

With 73 runs to get to avoid an inning's defeat, Mr Pledger's XI fared even worse than at their first attempt, scoring only 23.

Funeral of Mr F. Ballard

The funeral of Mr F. Ballard, whose death we announced last week, took place at St Mary's Church, Aspenden, on Monday afternoon.

The remains, encassed in a coffin of plain oak, were conveyed to the church in a Washington coach.

There were two mourning coaches and the immediate mourners were: Mr W. Ballard (brother), Mr and Mrs Walbey (sister and brother-in-law), Mr and Mrs Grey (sister and brother-in-law), Mrs A. Grey (sister), Mrs De Fontaine (sister), Mrs Walbey (sister), Messrs. C. Walbey and L. Walbey (nephews), Miss Stubbings and Messrs. J. Parker, D. Neale, E. Plumb (employees).

Others present were - Mr and Mrs Crouch, Mrs H. Clarke, Mrs Knight, Mrs D. Smith, Dr H.E. Dixon, Mrs Brewington, Mrs C. Miles, Mrs Wylds, Miss Parker, Mr and Mrs Beeton, Messrs. H.A. and W. Hare, W. Rowley, T.J. Stick, A. Anthony, F. Hamilton, H.H. Macklin, E.P. Borsberry, J. Boniwell, E.G. Thody, G. Aylott, C. Smith, W. Smith, D. Wallis and P. Hamilton.

Messrs. J.L. Cornwell and H. Clarke represented the Buntingford Gas and Coke Co., of which the deceased was a director.

There were many beautiful wreaths, including one from the employees and one from the tradesmen of Buntingford.

Death and Funeral of Mrs E.J. Crane

It is with much regret that we record the death of Mrs Ernest J. Crane, of Buntingford.

Mrs Crane, before her marriage was an assistant mistress in the Barkway Council Schools, a post she held with some distinction until her marriage in 1917. She was much esteemed by all her pupils on account of her kind disposition, and was greatly respected by a large circle of friends in Barkway and Buntingford.

After a short illness the end came on Sunday last, and much sympathy is felt for her sorrowing husband and her six months' old child.

On Wednesday afternoon the remains were conveyed by motor hearse to the deceased's old home at Barkway, where she was born. The funeral took place at Barkway yesterday (Thursday).

The Rev. W.T. Stubbs very impressively officiated at the service, and a large number of friends were present to pay their last respects.

Mrs Bowman presided at the organ, and the hymn sung was "On the Resurrection Morning." As the cortege left the church the organist played Mendelssohn's "Oh Rest in the Lord."

The plain oak coffin bore a breast plated inscribed:

Jessie R. Crane, Died October 28th, 1923, Aged 36 years.

The immediate mourners were Mr E.J. Crane (husband), Mr and Mrs Copeland (father and mother), Mr and Mrs C. Copeland (brother and sister-in-law), Mrs J. Crane (mother-in-law), Mrs H. Beeton (sister-in-law), Mr H. Beeton, Mrs E. Martin and Mrs Knife (cousins), Mrs F.G. Crane (aunt), Mrs Gray and the seven employees of the firm.

Amongst the 54 beautiful floral tokens were the following:

To our loving daughter, from her affectionate father and mother.

Death of Sir James Cantlie

The Funeral

We regret to record the death of Sir James Cantlie, the eminent surgeon, which took place in a London Nursing Home on Friday last. The deceased, who had been in failing health for about two years, was 75 years of age.

Sir James, who founded the Volunteer Medical Staff Corps, which later became the Royal Army Medical Corps, was an apostle of physical fitness. He possessed the fine gift of a true sense of humour, and was noted for his outspoken manner. He was knighted for his services in connection with Red Cross work during the war, and he worked untiringly for months in training V.A. detachments. He will be long remembered for the prominent part he took in securing the release of Sun Yat Sen, who organised a plot to seize Canton in 1895.

Sir James' connections with Cottered have extended over the past 30 years. He took up farming in the village as a hobby, and spent many happy days in his residence "The Kennels." He took a keen interest in all local matters, and an hour's chat with neighbouring farmers gave him great pleasure.

Following an impressive service at St Peter's, Vere Street, London, on Tuesday the commital portion of the funeral service was held at Cottered. The coffin, covered with a naval ensign, was borne to the grave by men who had been employed by the deceased, among these was John Parker, an old servant of the deceased's, who dug the ivy-lined grave.

There were nearly 100 beautiful wreathes from various organisations and institutions with which the deceased was connected. Among these were tribute from the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (of which the deceased was the founder), The School of Hygiene (London), The Union of Chinese Associations, The College of Working Women, The Governors of the Polytechnic, The Council and members of the London and Banff and Kncardine Association, 56th Detachment of V.A.D., The London Morayshire Club, The Knomuntong Association, The Hospitallers Club, The A.D.M.S., and Officers of the Medical Units of the 56th London Territorial Division, The 210th Division V.A.D., No. 2 British Red Cross, The British Red Cross Society, Old V.A.D. Members, No. 1 V.A.D., The Grand Principal of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, and thhe Chinese Students of Great Britain and Ireland.

Mourners from a wide area were present, and the service was conducted by the Rev. F.A. Gibbs, of Walkern. The immediate mourners were Commander C.E. Cantlie, R.D.S.C., R.N. (son), Capt. N. Cantlie, R.A.M.C., M.C., M.R.C.S. (son), Miss Allan, Miss Janet Allan, Mr and Mrs Ingall, Mr I. Ingall, Miss M. Roos, Mr Usher, and Nurse Brisley.

Jumble Sale

The jumble sale, in aid of the Home League Summer Outing Fund, realised £3.

The stall-holders were Mrs Parker, Mrs Howes, Mrs Miles and Mrs Harris.

Mrs Hills, sen., was in charge of the refreshment stall.

20th Jan 1928 - Young Britons Entertained

Young Britons Entertained

The members of the Buntingford Branch of "Young Britons" were entertained to a treat by the President, Mrs H.H. Williams, on Saturday last.

Long before 4.30 - the hour arranged for tea - there was a strong muster of Young Britons waiting admission to Foresters' Hall, where the treat was held. A bountiful tea was provided, and the sixty children present appeared to have good appetites.

After tea, bon-bons were distributed, and after a few games there was a lantern lecture given by Mr B.E. Thody and Mr R. Butler. In addition to many local slides, there were several showing various British possessions overseas, and these were explained to the children by Mrs Williams.

Before leaving, very hearty cheers were given for Mrs Williams for her kindness in entertaining such a large gathering, and to all the helpers. After the National Anthem had been sung, each child received gifts of chocolate, cake or oranges.

The arrangements throughout were excellent, Mrs Williams being assisted by Mrs Bonness, Mrs Darton, Mrs Parker, and Miss Olive Poulton. The two monitors, Horace Darton and Cyril Kimpton, were very much in evidence; their chief task was to call the roll - not a very easy one under the circumstances.
