Death of Mr Charles Pinner

The death of Mr Charles Pinner, at the age of 64 years, occurred at Lye End Farm on Wednesday last.

Mr Pinner had been ill for some time, and received treatment at the Royston Hospital at the beginning of this year. Although he received every attention at the Hospital and also from Mr and Mrs Wornham, with whom he had resided for many years, his health gradually failed until his death on Wednesday.

He was well known throughout the district and was always of a quiet nature.

The funeral will take place at Wyddiall Church tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.

Women's Institute Group Meeting

Members Entertained at Aspenden House

It is fortunate that Aspenden House, the home of Captain and Mrs H.H. Williams, contains so many spacious rooms, for one Thursday of last week some 200 members of the Buntingford Group of the Women's Institute, who were to have been entertained in the beautiful gardens, had to seek shelter indoors.

Mrs Williams, the popular Group Leader, had made all arrangements for an outdoor event, when a heavy shower sent everyone under cover.

The large rooms downstairs were cleared of furniture, and some 200 members from Buntingford, Buckland, Clothall, Hormead, Sandon, Westmill and Weston Institutes were entertained to tea, &c.

There was great enthusiasm throughout the afternoon, and a most enjoyable time was spent by all.

Members of the Westmill Institute gave a delightful sketch, entitled "My Man John," and later Mrs C.R. Turney, of Mardleybury Manor, gave an address on "Co-operation," in which she referred to Mrs Williams' work for the Group.

At the close Mrs May proposed a hearty vote from thanks to Mrs Williams for her hospitality, she had done wonders under such trying conditions.

Mrs E.T. Morris seconded the proposition, which was carried with great cordiality. Votes of thanks to the players and to Mrs Turney were proposed by Mrs H.C. Marshall.

Fortunate, the weather cleared up during the evening, and the company enjoyed a walk around the gardens. Photos of the members were taken on the lawn.

17th September 1926 - Rural District Council

Rural District Council

Captain H.H. Williams presided at the meeting of the Council which followed. Dr R.A. Dunn (M.O.H.) and the Surveyor (Mr E.G. Thody) were also present.

Vote of Condolence

The Chairman said he felt he must endorse the remarks which Mr Hummerstone had made with reference to the late Mr Edward Pigg.

Everyone must feel that men with such a high sense of public spirit were very rare, and the death of Mr Pigg was indeed a great loss.

Surveyor's Report

The Surveyor reported as follows:

Isolation Hospital

No cases of infectious disease have been notified, and the hospital remains closed.

Waterworks

The consumption of water during the past month has been:

1st week - 246,000 gallons

2nd week - 257,000 gallons

3rd week - 240,000 gallons

4th week - 258,000 gallons

The rest level has fallen and now stands at 37ft, being 1ft. lower that [sic] at September last.

Little Hormead Drainage

I have again interviewed Mr Patten with reference to the proposed drainage, and he is willing that the drain take the line shewn upon the accompanying plan.

Housing

Mr T. Pugh, of Ardeley, submits plans for the erection of a bungalow at Ardeley. The plans are in order.

Coal Emergency

Since submitting my last report, increased supplies have reached the merchants, which together with a quantity that I have been able to secure, has been sufficient to meet current needs.

Sandon

Samples of water from properties at Sandon have been sent for analysis, and the owners should be called upon to provide an efficiant and wholesome supply.

Estimates

The Clerk presented the estimates for the half-year ending 31st March, 1927.

The expenses were estimated at £1,675, and after deducting receipts, £813 was required. This was a decrease of £93 compared with the corresponding period last year.

Special Expenses

£139 was required for Special Expenses, which was a decrease of £82 compared with corresponding period of last year.

Tenders for Scavenging

Mr C.H. Poulton submitted a tender for Scavenging, 12/- per day. This was considered very reasonable and was accepted.

The other business was of a formal nature.

Group Conference at Buntingford

A Visit from Headquarters

A most successful meeting took place on Friday last at the Benson Hall, Buntingford, when members from Buckland, Clothall, Hormead, Sandon, Weston and Westmill joined their friends at Buntingford. Representatives from Standon and Pelham Groups were also present.

The chair was taken by Mrs H.H. Williams of Aspenden House, the Group Leader for his district.

In welcoming the members, Mrs Williams said it was a pleasure to see so many present, it showed the interest taken in the various Institutes.

Particular interest was taken in an address on "The responsibility of the individual member," given by the Hon. Miss Farrer from Headquarters.

The speaker urged the necessity for close co-operation between members and between Institutes. Each member had a most important part in the success of the Institute, and if she fulfilled her part the success of the body as a whole would be ensured.

Following her address came a charming little speech from Mrs Martin, of Hunsdon, a V.C.O.

Tea was capitally arranged and served by members of the Buntingford Institute, and later much amusement was caused by a game organised by Miss Farrer.

A vote of thanks to the speaker was proposed by Mrs Vernede, Group Leader for Standon, and seconded by Mrs H.C. Marshall, the local President.

The singing of the National Anthem closed a very pleasant and profitable afternoon, enhanced by delightful sunshine.

Before Miss Farrer left, she said she would always remember Buntingford as being "Such a friendly meeting."

8th October 1926 - Sandon - Royston & District Workers' Hospital Fund

Royston & District Workers' Hospital Fund

A meeting of the above Fund was held in the Schoolroom on Tuesday evening in last week, presided over by Mr Hammond, supported by the following members of the Fund from Royston: Messrs. A. Reeve (chairman), S.E. Roberts (hon. secretary), A. Gilbert (hon. treasurer), F. Dellar and W. Jackson (members of the committee), with Mr P.C. Walkden (hon. secretary of the Royston and District Hospital).

The Chairman, after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr S.E. Roberts, who gave an address on the purposes and position of the fund.

He emphasised the advantages which members had in the additional benefits paid under the scheme, apart from the great help the Fund afforded to the Hospital finances.

These additional benefits are: Admission free to Convalescent Homes and part expenses paid, part expenses for patients visiting Cambridge and other Hospitals for special treatment, as well as for sanatorium treatment, one-third of the cost of surgical appliances, trusses, &c., up to £2 in any one instance.

Five shillings towards members' eyeglasses or lenses. Members who have a clear card are free of any charge during the time they may be patients at the Hospital.

Mr Roberts was listened to with keen interest, and at the close questions were invited, and several were asked and satisfactorily answered.

Mr P.C. Walkden then briefly reviwed the work of the Hospital, and dealt with the number of patients treated and the cost per patient. He spoke of the great need for the Children's Ward, for which the Hospital was making a strong appeal.

Arrangements were made for collection of members' contributions in Sandon and neighbourhood by voluntary helpers working in co-operation with Mrs Nathan Cannon and Mrs Sartin, who kindly undertook to make the regular remittances to the Treasurer of the Fund. It was specially mentioned that members for their own satisfaction should keep their membership cards paid up.

The Committee are very grateful to Mrs N. Cannon for arranging the meeting and so giving the members a better opportunity of knowing more about the benefits which are obtainable under this Fund.

A vote of thanks to the visitors concluded a very successful meeting.

Women's Institute

On Friday, January 14th, the members had their annual New Year's Party.

The schoolroom, hung with many coloured balloons and streamers, looked quite festive.

The members and friends, numbering about 100, began to arrive about 6 o'clock, and son a happy party was enjoying various games.

Mrs Williams, of Aspenden House, was present, and entered fully into the amusements.

Refreshments were served at 7.30, a bountiful supply of good things having been provided. The room was then cleared for dancing, and Malt's Orchestra being in attendance, a merry crowd were soon dancing to the enlivening strains.

18th February 1927 - Funeral of Mr George Taylor

Funeral of Mr George Taylor

Amid evidences of great regret, the funeral of Mr George Taylor, whose death was announced in this Paper last week, as a result of appendicitis, took place on Monday afternoon.

The remains had been previously brought from Hertford to White Hall, and were conveyed in a plain oak coffin inscribed -

George Taylor, Died 9th February, 1927, Aged 28 years.

There was a large congregation, and as the cortege entered the Church the organist played appropriate music, and the service, which was conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. W.P. Farmer, was most impressive. Two hymns were sung "On the Resurrection Morning" and "Now the Labourer's Task is O'er."

The immediate mourners were - Mr and Mrs A. Taylor (father and mother), Mrs Jackson (sister), Mr N. Taylor (brother), Miss B. and Miss M. Taylor (sisters), Mr George Taylor and Mr George Deamer (uncles), Mr and Mrs A.W. Page (uncle and aunt), and employees of the farm.

Others present were - Mrs N. Cannon, Messrs. H.E. Dudley, F.B. Cannon, L. Cannon, G. Graves, C. Rand, T. Wornham, Henry May, R. Kingsley, C. Stick, and Miss Turney.

There were many beautiful wreaths suitably inscribed.

11th February 1927 - Death of Mr George Taylor

Death of Mr George Taylor

The death of Mr George Taylor, of White Hall, Sandon, has come as a greay shock to his friends in Sandon and Buntingford districts.

The deceased, who was only 28 years of age, is the son of Mr and Mrs Alfred Taylor, of White Hall Farm, Sandon.

He was taken ill last week with appendicitis, and removed to Hertford Hospital, where he died on Tuesday last.

The many friends of Mr and Mrs Taylor will extend to them deep sympathy in their sudden bereavement.

20th May 1927 - Sandon Dance

Dance

To raise funds for Church expenses, an enjoyable dance took place in the schoolroom on Friday, May 6th, at which a large company was present.

Miss R. Cannon and Miss H. Hammond kindly presided at the piano, and the presence of the Sandon Jazz Band (Messrs. Strickland, J. Clark, and Izzard) added further pleasure to the proceedings.

Cakes, which were given by Messrs. J. Walker & Sons, were competed for, and the Church Council's thanks are due to the Vicar, Mrs Austin, Mrs Bowman, Mrs L. Cannon, Mrs N. Cannon, Mrs G. Hatchett, Mrs Sherlock and Mrs W. Ward, also Miss Austin, Miss Small, and the Women's Institute, who kindly gave cakes, sugar, tea, &c.

The amount raised was £3 3s. 6d.

3rd June 1927 - Accident

Accident

A nasty bend in Sandon Lane, which was discussed by the Council at their last meeting, was the scene of an accident early on Thursday morning in last week.

Whilst motor-cycling towards Buntingford, Mr T. Wornham, a farmer, of Lye End Farm, Sandon, collided with a Ford Car owned by Mr Warner, of Walkern.

The impact was so great that the frame of the motor-cycle was doubled up, and the radiator of the car damaged.

Mr Wornham was badly injured, being cut about the lower part of the face. He was removed to his home, where he is progressing favourably.

Buntingford and District School Sports Association

1st Annual Sports Day

The 1st Annual Sports Day in connection with the above Association took place at Chapel End, Buntingford (by kind permission of Mr C. Smith), on Thursday in last week.

Teams came from the following schools: Anstey, Barkway, Braughing, Brent Pelham, Buntingford, Cottered, Great Hormead, Meesden, Great Munden, Puckeridge C. of E., Puckeridge R.C., Reed, Sandon, Standon, and Walkern. The competitors numbered 250.

The Sports Day was first arranged for Wednesday, June 2nd. It rained all day. This necessitated postponing the event until June 10th. It was again wet, but the programme was successfully carried out, although the bad weather increased the difficulties of rearrangements.

Teachers and children were very enthusiastic, and some really good material was discovered.

The team races were especially interesting, and the full results will be found below.

Mr E.E. Dennis, Hon. Sec. and Treas., explained the objects of the Association, and stated that Buntingford and District could now send a representative team to compete at the County School Sports to be held at Ware on Saturday, July 3rd.

He thanked all those who had helped to make the meeting a success, particularly the teachers in the schools in the district for their splendid co-operation. It was very pleasing to record that some of the smaller schools had supplied winners in the different events.

The Hon. Sec. and Treasurer thanked the Preisdent (Lieut.-Col. C.H.B. Heaton-Ellis) and the Hon. Baron Dimsdale for kindly giving a Shield for the Boys, also the Walkern School Managers for the Shield for the Girls, ad the C.E.M.S. (per Mr Pitcher, Cottered), for the Shield for the smaller schools. On behalf of the Association, he also thanked all those ladies and gentlemen in the district who had supported the movement, and Mr C. Smith for kindly placing the meadow at the disposal of the Association. He specially thanked Mr E.H. Roberson and Mr E.G. Thody for much help given prior to the day.

Mr H.E. Stickland (Braughing C.C. School) then thanked Mr E.E. Dennis for all the good work he had done, and said that he felt sure the Association would prosper. Enthusiastic cheers from the children followed.

Mr E.E. Dennis then called for cheers for the Band. The children and assembly then sang the National Anthem. The Hon. Sec. and Treasurer wishes to thank the following for their assistance:

28th May 1926 - Motor Cycle v. Motor Car

Motor Cycle v. Motor Car

A motor cycle ridden by Mr A. Clark, of Sandon, came into collision with a car being driven by Mr F.M. Warren, of St Ives, at Buckland on Whit-Monday.

The accident took place near the sharp turning from Buckland to Barkway. Mr Clark received injuries and had to be conveyed to his home, his machine being badly damaged.

The owner of the car was able to proceed after minor adjustments.

Another Smash

Another motor cycle accident is reported from Buckland. Two motor cyclists were on Monday proceeding to Edmonton, when one of them took the wrong turning at the foot of Whitby Lane and was thrown from his machine.

He received severe head injuries, and after medical attention was removed to Royston Hospital by Mr T.R. Carter.

5th Feb 1926 - Death of Mr George Pepper

Death of Mr George Pepper

Respected and esteemed by all who knew him, Mr George Pepper, who has resided at Chipping since he retired from farming five years ago, passed away at the advanced age of 86 on the 20th ult [sic].

For over 50 years he was tenant of Southfield Farm, Sandon, and was greatly respected in the village, and regarded as a kind and considerate employer and a generous friend.

The funeral took place at Throcking Churchyard on Saturday afternoon. The remains, encased in an unpolished oak coffin which had brass furniture, were conveyed to the church on a Washington car.

There were two motor-coaches, the immeadiate mourners being Mrs Jones (sister-in-law), Mr Walter Pepper, (nephew), Mr Bedford, Mr Hugh Bedford, Mrs Rowlatt, Mrs Scarf, and Mrs Oakley.

The Rev. A. Howard (Vicar of Layston) officiated, and in his short address referred to the simple Christian faith of the deceased, so abundantly exeplified in his long life.

There was a large number of friends present at the funeral to show their respect to the memory of the deceased. Amonst them were the Rev A.L. Panchaud (Throcking), the Rev. John Cole (Buntingford), Mr and Mrs A.W. Page, Mrs T.J. Stick, Mrs Cordell, Mrs Field, Mr and Mrs Norman Chalmers-Hunt, Mr Rand (of Southfield Farm), Mr Russell Pigg, Mr A.C. Bartlett, Mr James Cooper, Mr and Mrs Tofts, Mrs Turner, Mr Woodman etc.

There was a number of floral tributes.
