Death of Mr Charles Pinner

The death of Mr Charles Pinner, at the age of 64 years, occurred at Lye End Farm on Wednesday last.

Mr Pinner had been ill for some time, and received treatment at the Royston Hospital at the beginning of this year. Although he received every attention at the Hospital and also from Mr and Mrs Wornham, with whom he had resided for many years, his health gradually failed until his death on Wednesday.

He was well known throughout the district and was always of a quiet nature.

The funeral will take place at Wyddiall Church tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon.

17th September 1926 - Reed - Head-On Collision

Head-On Collision

On Friday morning, September 3rd, a head-on collision occured on the Reed Joint between a motor cyclist and a motor lorry.

The cyclist was seriously injured, and taken to Royston Hospital with a fractured left leg. Damage was done to both vehicles, particularly the motor cycle, which was badly smashed.

The motor lorry belonged to Messrs. Jeff & Bigly, of Letchworth, and was being driven by Mr Frank Kingham, of Mons Avenue, Baldock, from the direction of Barkway. The injured motor cyclist was Mr Ronald Cranwell, of Chrishall.

It was not quite clear how the accident happened. It was raining, and it was thought the cyclist may have had his head down and failed to see the motor lorry until too late. They both turned to avoid the other, but crashed with unfortunate results.

Harvest Thanksgiving

Harvest Thanksgiving Services were held at the Parish Church on Wednesday, October 6th, and the following Sunday.

On Wednesday evening there was a crowded congregation, when the preacher was the Rev. H.A. Marshall, Vicar of Royston. The collection, which amounted to £2 5s. 8d., was for the Royston Hospital.

On Sunday, October 10th, there were again crowded congregations, the Rector preaching at both the morning and evening services.

The collections throughout the day amounted to £3 5s. 7d., and were given to the Buntingford Nursing Association.

Royston & District Workers' Hospital Fund

A meeting of the above Fund was held in the Schoolroom on Tuesday evening in last week, presided over by Mr Hammond, supported by the following members of the Fund from Royston: Messrs. A. Reeve (chairman), S.E. Roberts (hon. secretary), A. Gilbert (hon. treasurer), F. Dellar and W. Jackson (members of the committee), with Mr P.C. Walkden (hon. secretary of the Royston and District Hospital).

The Chairman, after a few introductory remarks, introduced Mr S.E. Roberts, who gave an address on the purposes and position of the fund.

He emphasised the advantages which members had in the additional benefits paid under the scheme, apart from the great help the Fund afforded to the Hospital finances.

These additional benefits are: Admission free to Convalescent Homes and part expenses paid, part expenses for patients visiting Cambridge and other Hospitals for special treatment, as well as for sanatorium treatment, one-third of the cost of surgical appliances, trusses, &c., up to £2 in any one instance.

Five shillings towards members' eyeglasses or lenses. Members who have a clear card are free of any charge during the time they may be patients at the Hospital.

Mr Roberts was listened to with keen interest, and at the close questions were invited, and several were asked and satisfactorily answered.

Mr P.C. Walkden then briefly reviwed the work of the Hospital, and dealt with the number of patients treated and the cost per patient. He spoke of the great need for the Children's Ward, for which the Hospital was making a strong appeal.

Arrangements were made for collection of members' contributions in Sandon and neighbourhood by voluntary helpers working in co-operation with Mrs Nathan Cannon and Mrs Sartin, who kindly undertook to make the regular remittances to the Treasurer of the Fund. It was specially mentioned that members for their own satisfaction should keep their membership cards paid up.

The Committee are very grateful to Mrs N. Cannon for arranging the meeting and so giving the members a better opportunity of knowing more about the benefits which are obtainable under this Fund.

A vote of thanks to the visitors concluded a very successful meeting.

1st October 1926 - Cycling Accident

Cycling Accident

On Tuesday last a very unfortunate accident occurred to Miss Phyllis Wilkerson, of Sunny Hill, Buntingford.

She was cycling home from the Puckeridge School, when in coming down the hill towards Frost's Lodge, she appears to have come over faint, and fell heavily on the grass on the left of the road.

Mr W.S. Fordham, of London House, Puckeridge, luckily came along in his car almost immediately, and rendered valuable aid and assistance in lifting Miss Wilkerson (then unconscious) in his car, and conveyed her to Dr Fell's at Buntingford.

Unfortunately Dr Fell was not at home, but Mr Fordham, with the help of several kind friends, left her at the doctor's house quite comfortable, and Dr Fell returned home shortly afterwards.

On being examined it was found that the left wrist was badly broken and an Ex-ray was necessary.

Dr Fell, after attending to the injuries, immediately conveyed her in his car to the Royston Hospital. The wrist was set the following morning, and at the time of going to press the patient is going on quite satisfactorily.

4th March 1927 - Death of Mr S.F. Keen

Death of Mr S.F. Keen

We much regret to record the death of Mr S.F. Keen, youngest son of Mr and Mrs C. Keen, of Church Street. His death comes as a great blow to his parents, who have now lost the last of their five sons.

Since leaving school, Stanley Keen has been employed by Mr A. Jackson, of Church Street. He was ill last year, and was in Royston Hospital for some time.

He died early on Wednesday morning, and we understand the funeral has been arranged for tomorrow (Saturday).

Much sympathy is extended to his parents and other members of the family in their great loss.

8th April 1927 - Death of Mrs W. Mottram

Death of Mrs W. Mottram

We regret to record the death of Mrs W. Mottram, wife of Mr W. Mottram, a well-known tradesman of the town.

Mrs Mottram, who led a life of uprightness and devotion to duty, was greatly respected by everyone, and her death came as a surprise to the town.

After a short illness she was removed to Royston Hospital, where, after every attention, she died on Friday last. Deep sympathy is felt for her husband and other members of the family in their great loss.

30th July 1926 - Another Accident

Another Accident

Yesterday (Thursday) morning, another serious accident occurred, which resulted in Mr C. Smith, a farmer, of York Cottage, Buntingford, being conveyed to Royston Hospital sufering from an injury to his hip.

Mr Smith was carting grass from a meadow in Baldock Lane, and through the hors becoming restless Mr Smith was thrown to the ground.

He was seen by Dr Dixon who advised his immediate removal to hospital.

Whist Drive and Dance

A successful whist drive and dance was held on Wednesday evening, in aid of the Hertford and Royston Hospitals, and, by the kind permission of Mr Bright, on his lawn.

Commencing at 7.30, the whist drive continued until 9.15, the results of which were: Ladies- 1, Miss V. Miller; 2, Mrs Taylor; 3, Miss Hardey. Gentlemen - 1, Mr Warner; 2, Mr Marvell; 3, Mr Lee. Lucky chair - Mrs Hummerstone.

After the refreshments had been served by several ladies, dancing was carried on till 11, to the strains of the Buntingford Town Band under the able conductorship of Mr Smith. This much increased the enjoyment and success of the evening.

The gardens and laws were now illuminated by many fairy lights which Mr Bright had previously arranged, and which gave a charming and striking effect.

All the prizes had been most generously provided by the following kind donors: Mrs Greg, Mrs Guiness, Lady Furniss, Mrs Howard, Mrs Laird, Mr Deacon, Mr Coates and Mr Russell.

A very happy evening was terminated with the National Anthem by the band.

2nd November 1923 - An Accident

An Accident

Whilst acting as a beater at a Shoot at Buckland, on Saturday last, Mr Ernest McNulty was shot in the knee.

The unfortunate man was at once removed to the Royston Cottage Hospital, where he was detained.

On enquiry this (Friday) morning, we learn that he is going on satisfactorily.

Another Accident

What appears to have been a rather serious accident occured on Wednesday evening last to Mr Charles Sell, of Sunny Hill, Buntingford.

It seems that when cycling towards Chipping - and following a motor lorry which gradually pulled up on passing another lorry - Mr Sell failed to do likewise, and collided with the oncoming lorry, sustaining severe injuries to the face.

He was at once taken to the Royston Hospital, and up to the time of going to press, we are informed that he is progressing favourably.

Serious Accident on the Royston Road

Pillion-riding Danger

A serious accident occurred about 5 o'clock last Sunday evening on Reed Hill.

Mr Turner was returning home to Cambridge on a motor cycle with a friend on the pillion, and had just overtaken and passed a car driven by Mr Blakiston, of Buntingford, when another car coming from the opposite direction drew out to pass a stationary combination.

The motor cycle struck the off rear wing of the oncoming car, throwing the pillion rider in the air, who fortunately fell on the bank which saved him from serious injury, but the driver of the motor cycle was thrown forward and badly injured.

The pillion rider soon regained his feet and assisted in helping his friend to the side of the road.

It was evident that the man was in a serious condition, and Mr Blakiston at once took him to Royston Hospital, where it was found that he has sustained a fracture at the base of the skull.

The accident might have led to far more serious results to the already injured riders but for the presence of mind of Mr Blakiston.

Upon enquiry at the Hospital before going to press, Mr Turner was reported to be going as well as possible, and that there was no immediate cause for anxiety.

The April monthly meeting was a great success. There was a good attendance to hear a talk on gardens by Mrs Martin, of Hunsdon, which was thoroughly instructive and amusing.

It was followed by a most successful exchange of bedding and pot plants; and an egg collection for Royston Hospital amounted to 156 in number.

Mrs Deacon (the President) was in the chair. Hostesses were Mrs Pratt, Mrs J. Rayment, Miss F. Rayment, Mrs Read, Miss Read and Mrs T. Russell.

Mrs Course (Royston), Treasurer of the Ladies' Shilling Fund for the Children's Ward of the Royston and District Hospital, wishes to acknolwedge with grateful thanks the sum of £1 collected in Buntingford by two little children.

The Whist Drive and Dance at the Benson Hall on Wednesday, April 14th, was an unqualified success. The total proceeds came to £31 3s. 1d., against which the only charge was £5 for prizes, leaving £26 3s. 1d. to be divided between the Hertford and Royston Hospitals. Each hospital has already received its half share of £13 1s. 7d.

This splendid result could not have been achieved if Father Morgan's efforts had not been so cordially and generously supported by all the Clubs and Societies of the district. The Town Band gave their services free of charge, and the Women's Institute (under the capable leadership of Mrs Fell) organised and sold the refreshments.

Also the following Clubs gave time and labour freely, besides subscribing these amounts:

Aspenden Sports' Club (and friends) £3 10s.; Boys' Club, 10/-; British Legion, £1 1s.; Bowls Club, £1 12s.; Football Club, £1; Musical Society, £1; Tennis Club, £1; Women's Institute, 15/-; Workmen's Club, 10/-.

Special thanks are also due to Mr Wilkerson, who made no charge for printing window bills, tickets, and advertisements in the Gazette. And to Father Morgan for giving the use of the Benson Hall and doing the secretarial work and general organisation. 

Mrs Leslie gave an extra prize for the "lucky chair," and tables and cards were lent by the British Legion and Boys' Club.

Refreshments were provided by Mrs Stubbings, Mrs Wyman, Miss Parker, Mrs Leslie, Mrs Marshall, Mrs Williams, Mrs Fletcher, Mrs Blakiston, Miss Morgan, Mrs Philpott, Mrs Dixon, Miss Lushington, Mrs Coates, Mrs M.K. Smith, Mrs Croslegh, Mrs Fell, and the Convent.

The following helped to serve the refreshments: Mrs Aylott, Miss I. Aylott, Mrs S. Smith, Misses Camp, Mrs Feasey, Miss Ward, Misses Cornwell, Miss Blakiston, Mr Blakiston, Miss Parker, Miss Saunders, Mrs Leslie, Miss Leslie, Miss Lushington, Miss L. Graves, Mrs Thody. Messrs Moss lent china, glass, spoons, &c.

Mr P. Castle prepared the hall and cleaned up afterwards, assisted by Father and Miss Morgan.

At the whist, Mr Dennis was M.C. The prize winners were:

Ladies - 1 Miss Bower, 2 Miss M. Cornwell, 3 Miss Woodley; Consolation, Miss A. Deards.

Men - 1 Mr T. Martin, 2 Mr A. Francis, 3 Mr E. Ward; Consolation, Mr E. Moule.

Highest score, first half, Mr A. Moule; lucky ticket, Mrs Bedford; lucky chair, Mr E. Scrivener.

The prizes were presented by Dr Fell; and two hours' dancing to music supplied by the Town Band and Mrs Stapley wound up a successful and enjoyable evening. Mr L. Smith, as M.C., officiated in his usual tactful and efficient manner.

9th April 1926 - Help the Hospitals

The Whist Drive and Dance on behalf of the Hertford and Royston Hospitals next Wednesday in the Benson Hall promises to be one of the largest ever held in Buntingford. A record attendance is expected, and doubtless many will assist the cause by buying tickets even if unable to be present.

The price of tickets is 2/- if purchased on or before Monday, or 2/6 after Monday. They may be obtained from the various club representatives, including Messrs. W.T. Budd, H.B. Cutts, E.E. Dennis, S. Howlett, J. Lawrence, C.H. Poulton and W. Smith.

At the whist drive Dr Fell will distribute the many valuable prizes, which are now on view in Mr Lawrence's establishment. They include a "lucky ticket" prize.

Dancing will last two hours, and the Town Band are kindly giving their services for the dance music. Mr L. Smith will act as M.C. for the dancing, and Mr E.E. Dennis for the whist.

24th Feb 1928 - Death of Arthur Robert Franklin

Death

At the early age of 24 years, the death occurred early on Monday morning last of Mr Arthur Robert Franklin, fifth son of Mr and Mrs Franklin of High Street.

Mr Franklin had been ill for about six weeks, and had been a patient in Royston Hospital for one week. He was quite cheerful when he was visited by friends on Sunday, but passed away the following morning as already mentioned.

He had suffered from heart disease for some time, and a fall when quite young caused him to be lame for life.

The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon.

12th Oct 1928 - Buckland Harvest Festival

The Buckland Harvest Thanksgiving Services were held at St Andrew's Church on Friday evening in last week and on the following Sunday. The services were of a specially bright nature, and the Church was tastefully decorated. There were good congregations on each occasion.

On the Friday evening the Rev. L.A. Ewart, Rector of Aspenden, preached the sermon, taking for his text "Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee" (St. Like xii., 20). It was a stirring address, making a strong impression on all present, and although lengthy was far too short for most of the congregation.

The good old harvest hymns were heartily sung, and an excellent anthem rendered by the choir while the congregation was seated. It was taken from the words "While the earth remaineth, seed time and harvest shall not erase."

The Rector, Rev. A.J. McKinney, accompanied the choir on the organ for the anthem.

The Rector conducted the Sunday morning service, giving an excellent address on thankfulness. The hymns were heartily sung, and after the service there was a celebration of Holy Communion. The Rector also conducted a children's service in the afternoon, when the young people brought offerings of fruit and eggs.

The church was filled for the evening service, when the Rural Deal, Rev. Mc C. Kerr, Rector of Wydiall, preached from the text "A joyful and pleasant thing it is to be thankful" (Psalm 147). He emphasised thankfulness as being a fact in our lives. The choir again rendered the anthem, Miss F. Pigg presiding at the organ.

The following were responsible for the decorations: Mrs McKinney (east windows, choir stalls and reading desk), Mrs Morris (pulpit), Miss N. Pigg (lectern), Mrs J. And Mrs H. Carter (font and windows), Mesdames J. Hurry, C. Jackson, South, Whitby and others (windows).

The collections throughout the festival amounted to £7 2s., and were divided between the Royston Hospital and Addenbrooke's Hospital at Cambridge. The fruit and vegetables were also sent to Royston.

19th Feb 1926 - Help the Hospitals

Help the Hospitals

Last night a further meeting was held at the Presbytery of the "Help the Hospitals" Committee, who are organising a giant Whist Drive and Dance on Wednesday, April 14th, in aid of the Hertford and Royston Hospitals. 

Representatives of the various Clubs and Societies in the district were present with the exception of Mrs Fell (Women's Institute), Mr Clarke (British Legion), and Mr Dennis (Boys' Club), who sent apologies for unavoidable absence.

It was decided that the price of tickets for the Whist Drive and Dance should be 2/- each, with a ten shillings "lucky" prize for the bought on or before Monday, April 12th. The winner of the lucky ticket need not necessarily be present in order to win the lucky prize.

Nine valuable prizes will be awarded at the Whist Drive, besides the lucky ticket prize.

The interest already taken by the public in this event is an augury of a record attendance.
