Sunday School Treat

Not quite the usual number of scholars attending Layston Sunday School were present at the annual treat, several of them having gone away for the summer holidays.

The scholars, accompanied by teachers and a few mothers, assembled early on Saturday afternoon last at St Peter's for a short service, and from there made their way to Aspenden House (the infants being taken by car) at the kind invitation of Capt. and Mrs Williams.

Games whirled away the time until the bountiful tea was served on the lawn. Following this, the usual programme of races was carried out, bucket ball for mothers and teachers concluding the events.

After the distribution of prizes, the Vicar (Rev. A. Howard) expressed his thanks to all who had helped to make the treat so enjoyable, and called for cheers, which were heartily given.

The National Anthem concluded the proceedings.

On Thursday, February 17th, a very happy evening was spent in the Congregational Schoolroom, the occasion being the annual Prize Distribution in connection with the Sunday School.

Early in the evening the scholars assembled for games and refreshments, and teachers and scholars enjoyed a social hour-and-a-half.

Parents and friends of the scholars having joined the company, the Minister proceeded at once to distribute a number of book prizes gained by scholars for regular attendance during the past year.

After the distribution, he urged the young people to win not only book prizes, but also the greatest prize - Jesus Christ.

A lengthy programme was next carried through, consisting of a number of miscellaneous items:

Songs (by Miss Blanche Langham, Miss Dorothy Howard); pianoforte solos (Miss Langham, Miss Kathleen Smith); dialogue (Miss Dorothy Saunders, Miss Minnie Ashton); recitations (Miss Winning Conyard, Miss Dorothy Saunders, Miss Gertrude Howard, Miss Minnie Ashton, Miss Freda Howard, the Minister); whilst other contributors to the programme were Mrs G. Saggers (humourous readings) and Mr B.E. Thody.

During an interval a collection was taken for the Sunday School, and the scholars joined in the singing of a number of hymns from their School Hymnary.

The Benediction and Doxology concluded a very enjoyable evening.

Sunday School Week

In connection with the Congregational Sunday Schools of the country, last Sunday began "Sunday School Week," an effort to arrest the decline in the number of scholars attending the Sunday Schools.

Last Sunday evening at the Buntingford Congregational Church the Minister devoted the service to stressing of the scheme and, after referring to the beginnings of the Sunday School movement in England, emphasized the importance of the Sunday School, its work and teaching, to the child, the Church and the nation.

Sunday School Anniversary

Last Sunday a very happy time was spent in the Congregational Church, the occasion being the Sunday School Anniversary.

The visiting preacher was Mr C.V. Skipp, of London, E.C., who delivered very helpful and encouraging addresses, and whose visit was very much appreciated by the congregations that gathered during the day.

There was special singing by the scholars, who had been admirably trained by Mr Herbert Cutts. A word of appreciation must be given to Mr Cutts for the preliminary care he bestowed on the training; to the scholars for the excellent way in which they responded; to Mrs Peacock for her services with the violin throughout the day, and to the many parents and friends, who, by their presence, showed their practical interest in the work of the school. The funds of the school were considerably augmented by the offerings taken during the day.

In the morning the Minister conducted the first part of the service, and welcomed our visitor. Mr Skipp's address was to the scholars. He spoke on birthdays. The Anniversary was a birthday, and just as on the occasion of our individual birthdays we look forward, so we can do on this.

As the years go by we must look forward, and strive that they may find us advancing in kindness, goodness, character, and in all that Jesus wants us to be; so that even as others who had looked forawrd have made the world a better place to live in, e.g., Livingstone, Capt. Cook, Florence Nightingale, Grace Darling, we too shall follow their example and be worthy citizens and at last win the "Well done" of the Master.

In the afternoon, Mr Skipp gave the scholars another earnest and thoughtful address. Basing his remarks on the Parable of the Sower, he said there were many kinds of hearts in the world e.g., the stony heart, where the seed of the Word of God could not penetrate because it was turned against holiness and mercy; the heart openly receptive to the Word of God, which it views as a beautiful thing, but there is no depth of character to bring the resolution to a head; the heart that wants God, and that gives a ready response to the Word, but it wants other things as well, things which cannot live with the good seed; there are hearts here in the springtime of life, with wonderful possibilities, tomorrow they will be a power in the world, and the preacher urged his young hearers to accept the Master, to take the seed of His kindenss, love and self-sacrifice unto themselves and to let the word He wants to speak to them abide with them all their days, then the good seed will grow, and they will become men and women after His own heart.

Mr Skipp conducted the evening service, and address the parents and teachers. Telling the story of the conflict between David and Goliath of Gath, he said that each child has a Goliath to fight, and that giant is his own self. The child must learn to conquer self and self-interest, so that it falls with a thud to the ground. This can only be done with the stone of Love, slung from the sling of the Spirit of God.

Since every man and woman, whether he or she turns out good or bad, comes into the world first a little child, and with clasping hands, pattering feet, and sparkling eyes, he appealed to his hearers to realize [sic] the great responsibility that was laid upon them as they looked into the face of the child.

Congregational Church Sunday School

On Sunday afternoon, January 29ths, a very happy little service was held in the Buntingford Congregational Church, the occasion being the annual prize distribution in connection with its Sunday School.

The meeting was in the nature of an open service, which means that the parents of the scholars and any interested in the Sunday School and its work are invited to be present.

There was a good gathering, therefore, of other adults to join the scholars and their officers and teachers. The hymns chosen were very beautiful, and the whole service was very reverently gone through.

The special part of this service was the distribution of prizes to those scholars who had mdae the requisite number of attendances in 1927, and who had deserved commendation for good conduct.

Capt. Gloyns, of the Buntingford branch of the Salvation Army, was present and kindly presented the books to the successful scholars.

Mr R.F. Dellow, S.S. Superintendent, introducted Capt. Gloyns and acknowledged her kindly interest in the school, and later offered her the warmest thanks for coming.

Though the number of book prizes was small, the Captain made a pleasing little ceremony of it, and, in a happy little speech to the scholars, urged them to "keep clear of mud." This they could do in the strength of the saviour.

----------

On Wednesday evening last the Congregational Church scholars met with their officers and teachers in the schoolroom for a social evening. They all enjoyed a very happy time together, and entered with great pleasure into the games and competitions, &c., which had been arranged for them. They also had refreshments served to them during the evening and, as they left at the close, an orange.

----------

A weekly sewing class for girls is held in the Buntingford Congregational Schoolroom under Miss Edith Careless, and on Thursday evening, January 12th, the class met in the schoolroom for a social evening. A very pleasant time was spent by those who came, and after the tea which was provided for them the evening's programme consisted of games, recitations, &c.

Church Sunday School

The Sunday School Sunday was observed on Sunday last at St Peter's. In the morning the children occupied a prominent place. Children's hymns were sung, and the sermon by the Vicar, on Ephesians vi. 1-4, "Children, obey your parents in the Lord. Fathers...bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord," was such as the children could not fail to understand.

In the afternoon a service was held, when the parents were largely represented. The Prize-giving will be held today (Friday) at "The George" Assembly Room at 7, to which all parents and friends of the children are warmly invited. Mr B. Thody is kindly giving a lantern entertainment after the prizes have been given.

Lent services will be held throughout Lent on Thursday evenings (for the most part) at 7. The preachers on February 25th will be the Rev. A.G. King.
