Open-Air Whist Drive and Dance

Fairyland Scene at West View

The spell which has cast itself on any garden function arranged at West View during recent years has at last been broken, and for a pleasant change fine weather prevailed for a Whist Drive and Dance held in the pretty grounds, by kind permission of Mrs Wyman, on Wednesday evening last.

Early in the afternoon there was a slight shower, but the weather turned out fine later.

There was not such a large company present as was expected, due perhaps to the harvest operations; sixteen tables were occupied for whist, and several persons came in later for the dancing.

The Illuminations

By the time the whist had finished, the grounds had quite a fairyland resemblance; some 600-700 fairy lights and Chinese lanterns of various colours casting a beautiful glow over the lawns and the flower-beds. It was a charming sight.

The Standon Orchestra provided an excellent programme of dance music, and Mr Little (who presided at the piano) won admiration for the way he filled the post of pianist. The other members of the orchestra were Mr A.H. Hedges, Mr Hunter and Mr G. Wilmont, who also acted very efficiently.

The Committee desire (through the medium of the Buntingford "Gazette") to thank Mrs Wyman for so kindly placing her grounds at the disposal of the Society.

Best thanks are also due to Capt. and Mrs Denny, of Little Court, and Miss Lushington, for prizes; to Mrs E.G. Thody and Miss Thody for managing the refreshments; to Mr H. Clarke, who was a very efficient M.C.; Mr C. Miles and Mr E.C. Clarke, gate stewards; Mrs Stapley for the use of piano; Mr A.G. Day and Mr B.E. Thody for arrangements; Mr E.J. Crane, carting; Mr J. Holmes and the Ex-Service Men's Club, use of tables and chairs; Mrs Coates, gift of cakes; and to the Hon. Sec. (Mr E.G. Thody) for the illuminators. Mr A. Coxall also lent valuable assitance.

The Prizes

Prizes for whist were won by the following:

Ladies - 1 Miss Cornwell 160, 2 Miss Lushington 157, 3 Mrs Day 156.

Gents - 1 Mr Nash 165, 2 Mr S. Howlett 162, 3 Mr H. Cutts 157.

The attendance at the Benson Hall for the dance on St Patrick's night exceeded the most sanguine expectations. The organisers anticipated a hundred, but the number present was over a hundred and fifty.

Among the dangers were some who had never been in the Hall before, and they were pleasantly surprised at the excellence of the floor, which is undoubtedly the best for miles around.

The music was provided by the Standon Orchestra, who co-operated with the M.C., Mr Blakiston, in providing continuous dancing.

Among the special features were two "spot" dances, the first of which was won by Mr and Mrs Jackson, of Westmill, and the second by Mr Don Little and Miss Jordan.

Also a "Pandemonium" Dance, for which horns were issued, and the result fully justified the title!

The prize for the "lucky ticket" was won by Mr C. Smith.

The net proceeds were over £9, and the organisers are to be congratulated on the splendid success of their efforts. Hearty thanks are also due to all who provided the refreshments and prizes, and sold the former so efficiently, in addition to those who undertook the sale of tickets and prepared the Hall for the occasion. Each article of the refreshments was offered at one penny, and over 320 items were sold.

As the crowd streamed out of the Hall shortly after midnight, there were many requests for "another of the same kind" - the best proof of an enjoyable evening.

2nd November 1923 - A Broken Leg

A Broken Leg

The many friends of Mr D. Little will regret to learn that whilst playing in a football match at Puckeridge, on Saturday last, Mr Little had his leg broken.

He was conveyed to the Hertford County Hospital, where he is progressing quite satisfactorily.

Whist Drive and Fancy Dress Dance

The attendance at the whist drive and dance held at the Village Hall on Tuesday evening exceeded all expectations. The event was an entire success, and the promoters are to be congratulated on the result. The proceeds are being devoted to the Social Club.

Fifteen tables were in use for whist, and the following were the successful players:

Ladies - 1 Miss Hilda Reed (umbrella), 2 Mrs Barnes (chocolates); consolation, Miss Dora Jackson (handkerchiefs).

Gents - 1 Master T. Hummerstone (walking stick), 2 Mr L. Pegram (cigarettes); consolation, Mr Alec Pratt (handkerchiefs).

There were several entries for the fancy dress competition. Mr Hugh Holmes as "John Bull" won first prize (fountain pen), Miss Theakston as a "Dutch Boy" second (box of chocolates), while the prize (a clock) for the most original design was won by Miss Deacon, her "scarecrow" costume being very striking.

The prizes were presented to the winners by Mrs H.H. Williams who congratulated the recipients.

An excellent programme of up-to-date dance music was provided by Mr C. Little. Mr H. Bright very ably acted as M.C. throughout the evening.
