Fancy Dress Dance

A Successful Event

The fancy dress dance, held at the School on Friday evening last, was quite a success, and the organisers and workers are to be congratulated on the financial result, i.e., £8.

The event was in aid of the Women's Institute Funds, and there was a croweded attendance, a large number being attired in fancy dresses. The judges were Mr and Mrs F.B. Cannon, of Hyde Hall, and they had a difficult task to fulfil.

After much deliberation the judges awarded prizes to the following: Miss L. Hurry (Indian Prince), Mrs F. Pigg (Hawker), Mrs R. Stoten (Japanese Costume), Miss R. Beale (Uncle Sam), Miss ____ (Welsh Girl), Miss M. Pigg (Chrysanthemum), Miss E. Whitby (Cigar), Mrs S. Jarman (Ryder's Seeds), and Mr R. Jackson (Tramp).

The prizes were won in the various classes. Miss P. Morris, who very effectively represented a Post Office clearing box, passed on her prize.

The fancy and other dresses mingling for the dancing which followed presented a very striking scene. The Standon Orchestra provided an excellent programme of music, and when the party dispersed it was unanimously agreed that the event was one of the best of its kind held in Buckland.

Mention should be made of the Institute Committee, who were in charge of the refreshments, which gave satisfaction. As stated, the proceeds exceeded £8.

Whist Drive and Dance

A successful whist drive and dance was held in the School on September 28th, in aid of the children's treat.

Although the day was very wet, a good number was present. Miss F. Pigg presented the prizes to the following lucky winners:

Ladies - 1 Miss P. Jackson, 2 Mrs E. Bunce; Gents - 1 Mr F. Stoten, 2 Mr J. Baker; booby Mr S. Bullard; lucky chair Miss C Norris.

Excellent refreshments were served by the Women's Institute members, to whom the promoters wish to give their best thanks. A large iced cake was raffled, the winnter being Mr W. Gatward. Also a fancy sandwich, containing a lucky charm, given by Mrs Dommett, was won by Miss C. Hagger.

The Mavis Dance Band played splendidly, and a most enjoyable evening ended with the singing of the National Anthem.

Death of Mr B. Stoten

It is with regret that we record the death of Mr Bertie Stoten, the only son of Mrs W. and the late Mr W. Stoten, formerly of Buntingford.

The deceased, who had been ill for some time, passed away at his home at New Malden on Wednesday morning at the age of 21. Prior to his illness, he was an electrical engineer.

His father, whose death was reported in this paper in July, 1924, was for many years gardener at Throcking Rectory. He was buried at Aspenden Churchyard, and it is understood that the arrangements may be made to bring the remains of his son to Aspenden.

The old friends of Mrs and Miss Stoten will extend their deep sympathy to them in their sad bereavement.
