Whist Drive and Dance

A successful whist drive and dance was held on Wednesday evening, in aid of the Hertford and Royston Hospitals, and, by the kind permission of Mr Bright, on his lawn.

Commencing at 7.30, the whist drive continued until 9.15, the results of which were: Ladies- 1, Miss V. Miller; 2, Mrs Taylor; 3, Miss Hardey. Gentlemen - 1, Mr Warner; 2, Mr Marvell; 3, Mr Lee. Lucky chair - Mrs Hummerstone.

After the refreshments had been served by several ladies, dancing was carried on till 11, to the strains of the Buntingford Town Band under the able conductorship of Mr Smith. This much increased the enjoyment and success of the evening.

The gardens and laws were now illuminated by many fairy lights which Mr Bright had previously arranged, and which gave a charming and striking effect.

All the prizes had been most generously provided by the following kind donors: Mrs Greg, Mrs Guiness, Lady Furniss, Mrs Howard, Mrs Laird, Mr Deacon, Mr Coates and Mr Russell.

A very happy evening was terminated with the National Anthem by the band.

2nd November 1923 - An Accident

An Accident

Whilst acting as a beater at a Shoot at Buckland, on Saturday last, Mr Ernest McNulty was shot in the knee.

The unfortunate man was at once removed to the Royston Cottage Hospital, where he was detained.

On enquiry this (Friday) morning, we learn that he is going on satisfactorily.

Another Accident

What appears to have been a rather serious accident occured on Wednesday evening last to Mr Charles Sell, of Sunny Hill, Buntingford.

It seems that when cycling towards Chipping - and following a motor lorry which gradually pulled up on passing another lorry - Mr Sell failed to do likewise, and collided with the oncoming lorry, sustaining severe injuries to the face.

He was at once taken to the Royston Hospital, and up to the time of going to press, we are informed that he is progressing favourably.

Serious Accident on the Royston Road

Pillion-riding Danger

A serious accident occurred about 5 o'clock last Sunday evening on Reed Hill.

Mr Turner was returning home to Cambridge on a motor cycle with a friend on the pillion, and had just overtaken and passed a car driven by Mr Blakiston, of Buntingford, when another car coming from the opposite direction drew out to pass a stationary combination.

The motor cycle struck the off rear wing of the oncoming car, throwing the pillion rider in the air, who fortunately fell on the bank which saved him from serious injury, but the driver of the motor cycle was thrown forward and badly injured.

The pillion rider soon regained his feet and assisted in helping his friend to the side of the road.

It was evident that the man was in a serious condition, and Mr Blakiston at once took him to Royston Hospital, where it was found that he has sustained a fracture at the base of the skull.

The accident might have led to far more serious results to the already injured riders but for the presence of mind of Mr Blakiston.

Upon enquiry at the Hospital before going to press, Mr Turner was reported to be going as well as possible, and that there was no immediate cause for anxiety.
