Cycling Accident

On Tuesday last a very unfortunate accident occurred to Miss Phyllis Wilkerson, of Sunny Hill, Buntingford.

She was cycling home from the Puckeridge School, when in coming down the hill towards Frost's Lodge, she appears to have come over faint, and fell heavily on the grass on the left of the road.

Mr W.S. Fordham, of London House, Puckeridge, luckily came along in his car almost immediately, and rendered valuable aid and assistance in lifting Miss Wilkerson (then unconscious) in his car, and conveyed her to Dr Fell's at Buntingford.

Unfortunately Dr Fell was not at home, but Mr Fordham, with the help of several kind friends, left her at the doctor's house quite comfortable, and Dr Fell returned home shortly afterwards.

On being examined it was found that the left wrist was badly broken and an Ex-ray was necessary.

Dr Fell, after attending to the injuries, immediately conveyed her in his car to the Royston Hospital. The wrist was set the following morning, and at the time of going to press the patient is going on quite satisfactorily.

Mr and Mrs Wilkerson wish to thank most sincerely all those king friends who so readily looked after Phyllis (in their absence) until the arrival of Dr Fell; and also to Mr W.S. Fordham and Dr Fell for their most valued assistance; and also for the use of their cars.

Women's Institute

A meeting was held on Tuesday evening in last week, in the Mission Room to discuss the question of starting a Women's Institute in the village.

There was a good attendance, with Mrs Wardle in the chair. An interesting address was given by Mrs C.R. Turney, V.C.O., on "The aims and objects of the Women's Institute." A hearty vote of thanks was passed to her on the motion of the chairman.

The vote was then put to the meeting as to whether a Women's Institute should be started, with the result that all present were in favour.

The following were elected for the coming year: President, Mrs Wardle; vice-president, Mrs C.R. Turney; secretary, Mrs Kingsley; treasurer, Miss Tott; committee, Mesdames J. Bonfield, E. Drage, Giffen, F. Gatward, Hambleton, Knights, Lawrence, Scripps.

The first monthly meeting will be held on Thursday evening, October 28th, when new members will be welcomed.

Annual General Meeting

The Season's Work

The annual general meeting of the Buntingford and District Musical Society was held at the Congregational Schoolroom on September 20.

Dr R.W. Fell, M.D., presided, and there was a good attendance of members.

Before the commencement of the business, the chairman said he would like to compliment the Society on its splendid success last season.

At the Letchworth Festival they had carried off two cups, two firsts and one second, which was a great honour. Personally he felt that it was a great honour to be president of such a Society.

In congratulating them on their past record, he also expressed the hope that their work in the coming season would reach an equally high standard.

1926-27 Season

The coming winter season was discussed, and it was decided to hold practices every Monday at 7 p.m. Members were also asked to enrol new members, tenors being especially required.

The Herts Musical Festival will be held at St Albans early next year, and any wishing to join the Society should obtain particulars from the Conductor (Mr E.E. Dennis), Mr H. Cutts, Mr A.G. Day, or Mr S. Daniels.

Election of Officers

The election of officers resulted as follows: President (Dr R.W. Fell, M.D.), re-elected; Hon. Sec. Mr H. Cutts; and Hon. Treasurer, Mr S. Daniels.

Mr E.E. Dennis was unanimously appointed conductor. The Chairman and Mr W.J. May referred in eloquent terms to the efficient way in which Mr Dennis had carried out his duties. He had brought the Society to its present high state of efficienct, and they did not known [sic] what they would do without him. (Applause).

Mr W.J. May, the late Hon. Treas., was reluctantly compelled to resign that post and as stated above Mr H. Cutts was appointed to fill the vacancy. Mr Dennis moved a vote of thanks be accorded Mr May for his valued services during the past. (Applause).

He (Mr Dennis) also thanked the officers and members for the way in which they had carried out their duties. The members had given their local and regular support. He hoped that the splendid keenest that had prevailed amongst them would continue.

Thanks were also accorded Miss M. Macklin for her great help at the piano last season.

Before the meeting closed Mr Dennis moved a hearty vote of thanks to their President, Dr Fell.

Their President had always taken a deep interest in the Society, and it was a great pleasure to have him at their head. He hoped that the great interest Dr Fell took in all matters relating to the Society would continue. (Applause).

The Autumn exchange of books took place on September 22nd, when four new boxes of books were deposited at the Parish Room.

60 borrowers took advantage of the Library on Tuesday last, which will now be open from 4 to 4.30, and from 7.30 to 8.

Two books are missing from last issue, "Keren of Lowbole" and "Palace Beautiful." Will borrowers kindly return at once.
