4th March 1927 - Westmill Women's Institute

Women's Institute

On Wednesday, February 23rd, the members of the Women's Institute greatly enjoyed a lecture given by Mr Heydeman, entitled "London on the top of a Bus."

The lecturer showed how you can trace some of the history of our great and marvellous city of London by studying the names of the streets. He said that in no other town were the streets named after families who once possessed the land, and you can in many cases tell by the name the possible date when a particular piece of land became part of London.

The lecture was admirably delivered, the lecturer gradually becoming more and more thrilled with his subject, especially when he came to speak of the Tower of London, "One of the most marvellous buildings on God's earth."

After the lecture, there were games and some dancing, and the meeting closed with God save the King.

Sale of Work

The Annual Sale for Home and Foreign Missions was held at the George Assembly Room on Wednesday last, and was opened at 3 o'clock with prayer by the Vicar, Rev. A. Howard.

The attendance was not what might have been expected, but the friends who did come were liberal in their purchases, with the results that the proceeds were rather more than last year - £5 1s. 3d. for Home Missions (C.P.A.) and £8 10s. for C.M.S.

Mrs Dixon, Miss Fry, Mrs Wyman and Mrs J. Smith were in charge of the C.M.S. Stall, while that for Home Missions was in the hands of Mrs Fell, Mrs Barham, and Mrs Howard.

A number of efficient and willing helpers presided over the teas and the cake stall, while Miss Helen Fraser, Miss Jean Armstrong and Miss Barbara White did good business at the sweet stalls.

All the sweets, cake, and provisions for the tea were given by ladies in the town, and added comfortably to the sum raised.

Death of Mr S.F. Keen

We much regret to record the death of Mr S.F. Keen, youngest son of Mr and Mrs C. Keen, of Church Street. His death comes as a great blow to his parents, who have now lost the last of their five sons.

Since leaving school, Stanley Keen has been employed by Mr A. Jackson, of Church Street. He was ill last year, and was in Royston Hospital for some time.

He died early on Wednesday morning, and we understand the funeral has been arranged for tomorrow (Saturday).

Much sympathy is extended to his parents and other members of the family in their great loss.
