G. Scarborough Taylor, P.A.S.I., has received instructions from the exors. of the late Mr W. Bysouth to sell by auction on Thursday next, October 21st, at 1 p.m., the whole of the household furniture and effects, comprising bedroom appointments, mahogany tallboy, drawing and dining room suites, fine grandfather clock in oak case, antique circular table, dining tables, arm chairs, overmantels, mahogany sideboard, french-style veneered kneehole writing desk, &c., &c., kitchen utensils and outdoor effects.

On view morning of sale from 9a.m. to 12 noon.

1st October 1926 - Reed Women's Institute

Women's Institute

A meeting was held on Tuesday evening in last week, in the Mission Room to discuss the question of starting a Women's Institute in the village.

There was a good attendance, with Mrs Wardle in the chair. An interesting address was given by Mrs C.R. Turney, V.C.O., on "The aims and objects of the Women's Institute." A hearty vote of thanks was passed to her on the motion of the chairman.

The vote was then put to the meeting as to whether a Women's Institute should be started, with the result that all present were in favour.

The following were elected for the coming year: President, Mrs Wardle; vice-president, Mrs C.R. Turney; secretary, Mrs Kingsley; treasurer, Miss Tott; committee, Mesdames J. Bonfield, E. Drage, Giffen, F. Gatward, Hambleton, Knights, Lawrence, Scripps.

The first monthly meeting will be held on Thursday evening, October 28th, when new members will be welcomed.

Bowls Club

Successful Whist Drive

A whist drive, in aid of the funds of the Buntingford Bowls Club, was held at the George Assembly Rooms on Monday evening. There was a good company present, upwards of 70 sitting down to whist, which commenced at 7.30.

Mr E.E. Dennis officiated as M.C., and the successful players were:

Ladies - 1, Mrs Philpott, 189 (box chocolate); 2, Mrs Lawrence, 178 (jam dish); 3, Miss D. Camp, 170 (sugar sifter).

Gents - 1, Mr Hatchett (clock); 2, Mr C. Baker (rose bowl); 3, Mr G. Holmes (cigarettes).

Mrs W.J. May congratulated the winners and distributed the prizes.

Mr W.J. May, the Captain of the Club, thanked the company for their support. A vote of thanks to Mr Dennis was proposed by Mr F.W. Butler and carried with applause.

At the close, the result of the Xmas Ballot was announced by Mr Dennis.

25th March 1927 - Chess Match

Chess Match

A chess match between the Cottered Chess Club and a Buntingford team, arranged by Mr B.E. Thody, took place on Monday evening.

There were some good games, and the result was a win for Buntingford by four games to two.

The scores were as follows:
