Original image on Facebook

Band Concert

To have won the Thousand Guinea Band Trophy five times is a record of which any band might be proud.

The famous St Hilda Band, who are visiting the town on Monday next, hold this distinct honour, and there is no doubt that there will be a large attendance at the Red House, kindly placed at the disposal of the Band by Mr and Mrs Claud Fraser.

Capt. and Mrs Williams have also kindly lent their charming grounds for the afternoon performance. The Band have with them this time Mr Lawson Williams, a tenor of repute.

Mr Lawson Williams was late principal tenor of the Carl Rosa Opera Company and Queen's Hall Concerts, London.

The concert will be the musical event of the season.

Correspondence

The St Hilda Band

Dear Sir,

May I be permitted to ask, through the columns of the "Gazette," for the support of the people of Buntingford and District, on Monday next, when the famous St Hilda Band is visiting Buntingford.

The Band has recently completed a tour of the South Coast, and the opportunities of hearing them in this district is a unique one.

I should also like to say that the Band is visiting Buntingford in order to assist the Town Silver Band to pay off the balance of the new instrument fund, and in thanking them for their support we do not forget the support given us by local residents to whom a hearty invitation to the famous Band's concert on Monday is extended.

Yours faithfully,

Ernest J. Smith,

Bandmaster Buntingford Town Band,

9th July, 1926.

The paper also has an advert for two performances.

Whist Drive and Dance

A successful whist drive and dance was held on Wednesday evening, in aid of the Hertford and Royston Hospitals, and, by the kind permission of Mr Bright, on his lawn.

Commencing at 7.30, the whist drive continued until 9.15, the results of which were: Ladies- 1, Miss V. Miller; 2, Mrs Taylor; 3, Miss Hardey. Gentlemen - 1, Mr Warner; 2, Mr Marvell; 3, Mr Lee. Lucky chair - Mrs Hummerstone.

After the refreshments had been served by several ladies, dancing was carried on till 11, to the strains of the Buntingford Town Band under the able conductorship of Mr Smith. This much increased the enjoyment and success of the evening.

The gardens and laws were now illuminated by many fairy lights which Mr Bright had previously arranged, and which gave a charming and striking effect.

All the prizes had been most generously provided by the following kind donors: Mrs Greg, Mrs Guiness, Lady Furniss, Mrs Howard, Mrs Laird, Mr Deacon, Mr Coates and Mr Russell.

A very happy evening was terminated with the National Anthem by the band.
