Aspenden v. Allenburys

Played at Aspenden on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for the home side after a good game.

For about half-an-hour the play was very even, then Aspenden, who were always more dangerous, obtained three quick goals, H. Parker scoring the first two, and from a well-placed corner the visitor's centre-half put through his own goal.

Just before the interval the 'Bury scored. At half-time Aspenden were leading 3-1.

Immediately on resumption Aspenden attacked, and K. Smith increased the lead.

The 'Bury then scored direct from a corner, but after a melee in their goal-mouth H. Parker again scored.

Result- Aspenden 5, Allenburys 2. 

14th January 1927 - Universal Week of Prayer

Universal Week of Prayer

Meetings in connection with the above, organised by the World's Evangelical Alliance in 1846, and which has been observed in Buntingford for the past 30 years, were held during the first week of the New Year.

The appointed subjects for prayer, which were being remembered by Christians in all parts of the world, included Thanksgiving and Humiliation, the Universal Church, Nations and Governments, Home and Foreign Missions, and our Young People.

Prayer was led on successive days by a short address from Rev. A. Howard, Rev. J. Cole, Rev. E.E. Empringham, Mr H. May, and Capt. W. Green.

The meetings were well attended, and were noticeable for an atmosphere of fellowship and unity.

14th January 1927 - Buckland

Buckland

Past and present scholars of Buckland School were entertained to tea by the Rev. and Mrs Phillips of Buckland Rectory, on Friday, January 7th, in the school.

About 60 partook of a splendid tea, followed by songs by the Rev. and Mrs Phillips, and by the children, also recitations by the latter.

Various games were then played, which produced a great deal of fun.

The great feature of the evening was a large Christmas Tree, laden with presents and brilliantly lighted. Each child received two useful presents.

Afterwards those who wished to do so, indulged in dancing, and a very enjoyable evening ended with the singing of the National Anthem, and a call for three cheers by Francis Cole, one of the scholars, to which a hearty response was made.

As the children went out, each was given a bun, an orange and a packet of sweets.

Children Entertained

On Tuesday, about 50 children, residing in Baldock Road, Buntingford, assembled at the George Hotel for the annual treat, which was generously given by Mr and Mrs H.C. Marshall, of Longmead.

Mrs C.S. Coates catered and prepared a sumptuous repast; the long tables being loaded with sweetmeats calculated to suit juvenile appetites.

Each child was given a cracker containing a hat or cap. After tea, the tables were cleared and the room arranged for games, &c., which went on merrily till 6.30 when each child was presented with a toy from the large Xmas tree.

Mrs Marshall distributed the gifts to the children and also to the whole of the grown-ups present.

Before leaving, cakes, lemonade and oranges were served and very hearty cheers given for Mr and Mrs Marshall, who were both present. The treat passed off very successfully.
