The monthly meeting for October was held on the 13th inst., in the School, and a very good attendance of members had another nice evening.

Business dispensed with, Mr C. Bullard (Letchworth), gave a very good demonstration on basket-making, a hearty vote of thanks being passed to him by Mrs J. Carter.

A memory competition was entered into by quite a large number, Mrs Jarman, Miss N. Carter, and Mrs H. Carter having to cut for the prize, the latter then winning.

Tea was served by Mrs J. Bishop, Mrs Geaves, Mrs Beadle, Mrs Masters, Mrs A. Gilby, and Mrs W. Hagger.

Exchange and Mart (jumble sale) was keenly entered into, and the saleswomen were kept fairly busy for quite a little time.

At the previous monthly meeting, Mrs E.T. Morris, Miss P. Morris, Mrs Masters, Mrs C. Jackson and Mrs H. Carter entertained the members with recitations, singing and music. 

Many jolly meetings are looked forward to as a Women's Institute singing class has been formed, and is in the capable hands of Mrs Edridge, of Furneaux Pelham.

Funeral of Mr Stanley F. Keen

The funeral of Stanley F. Keen, whose death at the early age of 18 years was reported in this Paper last week, took place at Layston Church on Saturday afternoon, the service being conducted by the Vicar, the Rev. A. Howard.

Members of the Buntingford Independent Foresters' Society carried out the duty of bearers, the deceased being a junior member of that Society. His employer, Mr A. Jackson, kindly lent his car, and the evidences of sorrow were marked by the number of people present and the beautiful floral tributes.

Buntingford played their first League match of the season on Saturday last, when they journeyed to Rosedale (Cheshunt).

A very enjoyable game resulted in a win for Buntingford by 4 points. Scores:

A meeting of the Rural District Council followed, Captain H.H. Williams presiding.

Surveyor's Report

The Surveyor reported as follows:

Waterworks

The consumption of water during the past month has been:

1st week - 252,000 gallons.

2nd week - 258,000 gallons.

3rd week - 252,000 gallons.

4th week - 246,000 gallons.

A further supply of lubricating oil is required.

Isolation Hospital

No fresh cases of infectious disease have been reported, one patient remaining under treatment.

Water Services

Two applications for water service are submitted.

Coal Emergency

The local merchants' supplies became depleted on 19th inst., but supplies have been obtained from private sources, which will carry up to the end of June. In addition one merchant has this week secured a consignment of 18 tons.

The Council sanctioned the purchase of 40 gallons of lubricating oil from Messrs. Hagger & Cooper.

Housing Matters

The Surveyor reported on the various Housing Sites in the Union.

Application for the fixing of a register stove in one of the Sunny Hill houses was granted.

Assessment Committee

The following were appointed to serve on the Assessment Committee representing the Ashwell, Royston and Buntingford Unions and the County Council: Messrs. C. Hummerstone, G.C. Wilson and H.E. Dudley.
