Buntingford and District School Sports Association

1st Annual Sports Day

The 1st Annual Sports Day in connection with the above Association took place at Chapel End, Buntingford (by kind permission of Mr C. Smith), on Thursday in last week.

Teams came from the following schools: Anstey, Barkway, Braughing, Brent Pelham, Buntingford, Cottered, Great Hormead, Meesden, Great Munden, Puckeridge C. of E., Puckeridge R.C., Reed, Sandon, Standon, and Walkern. The competitors numbered 250.

The Sports Day was first arranged for Wednesday, June 2nd. It rained all day. This necessitated postponing the event until June 10th. It was again wet, but the programme was successfully carried out, although the bad weather increased the difficulties of rearrangements.

Teachers and children were very enthusiastic, and some really good material was discovered.

The team races were especially interesting, and the full results will be found below.

Mr E.E. Dennis, Hon. Sec. and Treas., explained the objects of the Association, and stated that Buntingford and District could now send a representative team to compete at the County School Sports to be held at Ware on Saturday, July 3rd.

He thanked all those who had helped to make the meeting a success, particularly the teachers in the schools in the district for their splendid co-operation. It was very pleasing to record that some of the smaller schools had supplied winners in the different events.

The Hon. Sec. and Treasurer thanked the Preisdent (Lieut.-Col. C.H.B. Heaton-Ellis) and the Hon. Baron Dimsdale for kindly giving a Shield for the Boys, also the Walkern School Managers for the Shield for the Girls, ad the C.E.M.S. (per Mr Pitcher, Cottered), for the Shield for the smaller schools. On behalf of the Association, he also thanked all those ladies and gentlemen in the district who had supported the movement, and Mr C. Smith for kindly placing the meadow at the disposal of the Association. He specially thanked Mr E.H. Roberson and Mr E.G. Thody for much help given prior to the day.

Mr H.E. Stickland (Braughing C.C. School) then thanked Mr E.E. Dennis for all the good work he had done, and said that he felt sure the Association would prosper. Enthusiastic cheers from the children followed.

Mr E.E. Dennis then called for cheers for the Band. The children and assembly then sang the National Anthem. The Hon. Sec. and Treasurer wishes to thank the following for their assistance:

Death of Sir James Cantlie

The Funeral

We regret to record the death of Sir James Cantlie, the eminent surgeon, which took place in a London Nursing Home on Friday last. The deceased, who had been in failing health for about two years, was 75 years of age.

Sir James, who founded the Volunteer Medical Staff Corps, which later became the Royal Army Medical Corps, was an apostle of physical fitness. He possessed the fine gift of a true sense of humour, and was noted for his outspoken manner. He was knighted for his services in connection with Red Cross work during the war, and he worked untiringly for months in training V.A. detachments. He will be long remembered for the prominent part he took in securing the release of Sun Yat Sen, who organised a plot to seize Canton in 1895.

Sir James' connections with Cottered have extended over the past 30 years. He took up farming in the village as a hobby, and spent many happy days in his residence "The Kennels." He took a keen interest in all local matters, and an hour's chat with neighbouring farmers gave him great pleasure.

Following an impressive service at St Peter's, Vere Street, London, on Tuesday the commital portion of the funeral service was held at Cottered. The coffin, covered with a naval ensign, was borne to the grave by men who had been employed by the deceased, among these was John Parker, an old servant of the deceased's, who dug the ivy-lined grave.

There were nearly 100 beautiful wreathes from various organisations and institutions with which the deceased was connected. Among these were tribute from the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (of which the deceased was the founder), The School of Hygiene (London), The Union of Chinese Associations, The College of Working Women, The Governors of the Polytechnic, The Council and members of the London and Banff and Kncardine Association, 56th Detachment of V.A.D., The London Morayshire Club, The Knomuntong Association, The Hospitallers Club, The A.D.M.S., and Officers of the Medical Units of the 56th London Territorial Division, The 210th Division V.A.D., No. 2 British Red Cross, The British Red Cross Society, Old V.A.D. Members, No. 1 V.A.D., The Grand Principal of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, and thhe Chinese Students of Great Britain and Ireland.

Mourners from a wide area were present, and the service was conducted by the Rev. F.A. Gibbs, of Walkern. The immediate mourners were Commander C.E. Cantlie, R.D.S.C., R.N. (son), Capt. N. Cantlie, R.A.M.C., M.C., M.R.C.S. (son), Miss Allan, Miss Janet Allan, Mr and Mrs Ingall, Mr I. Ingall, Miss M. Roos, Mr Usher, and Nurse Brisley.

Funeral of the Rev. W.J. Tapper

Amid evidences of the deepest sympathy and regret, the funeral of the Rev. W.J. Tapper, whose death we announced last week, took place at Cottered Parish Church on Saturday afternoon last.

The first portion of the service was taken by the Rural Dean (the Rev. F.R. Williams). The organist (Miss Beamiss) was at the organ, and played suitable music during the assembling of the congregation. The congregation was a very large and representative one, the spacious church being almost filled. The seating arrangements were in the hands of Mr T.J. Stick, Mr W.N. Sanders and Mr W.J. Pitcher.

The procession into the church was headed by the Rural Deal (the Rev. F.R. Williams), Rev. A.L. Panchaud, Rev. F.B. Harton, Rev. A. Howard, Rev. F.B. Phillips, Rev. H. Sheppard, Rev. Quinn, Rev. Fisher, Mr Stevenson, and Mr Busby (Lay Readers) and the Surplice Choir.

Following the chanting of Psalm 90, the hymn "The radiant morn has passed away" was feelingly sung, and the Lesson was read by the Rev A.L. Panchaud. Then came the singing of the following beautiful hymn:

As the cortege left the church the congregation changed the Nunc Dimittis. The last sad rites took place at the graveside amid much manifestation of sorrow, the clergy taking part being the Rural Dean, the Rev. A. Howard and the Rev F.B. Phillips.

The family mourners were Mrs W.H. Tapper (wife), Messrs William and Cyril Tapper (sons), Miss M. Tapper (daughter), Messrs. Hugh and Kenneth Tapper (sons), Mr and Mrs Coulson (brother-in-law and sister), Mrs Oram (sister-in-law), Mrs Pidwell (sister-in-law) and Miss Wale.

Among others present, we observed the Rev. L.W. Wright, the Rev A. McKerr, Rev John Cole, Mr and Mrs H.E. Dudley, Mr and Mrs A.W. Page, Mr and Mrs T. Kingsley, Mr and Mrs W.N. Sanders, Mr and Mrs A. Beadle, Mr and Mrs R.M. Huil, Mr W.J. Pitcher, Mr T.J. Stick, Miss Gruner, Dr R.W. Fell, Mr and Mrs B.A. Edwards, Mr H. May, Mr and Mrs H. Cornwell, Mrs Charles, Mr and Mrs H. Sheppard, Miss Beamiss, Miss Wilderspin, Miss Pearman, Mr D. Kingsley and Mr Martin.

Beautiful floral tributes were received from sympathisers. The grave was beautifully lined with moss and bunches of primroses by Mr A. Beadle, who carried out the duties of undertaker in a very satisfactory manner.

After the funeral a muffled peal was rung on the church bells.
